—: —♦ | LOWER COURT. ; / " (Before Mr. W. G. Hiddell, S.M.) OLD THEFT TRACKED DOWN. EPISODE ON S.S. MAORI. In the Court yesterday Harold Bronson pleaded not guilty to a charge of. having stolen a brfel-bag and contents, valued at .©>, and one proof coat, valued at tho property of Dr. Alexander Douglas,'of Oiimaru. It was stated that on November 22 Dr. and Mrs.-Douglas, of Oamaru, went down to the steamer Maori which was. lying at the Wellington wharves and le.lt their luggage in their cabins. They, then went away for a few minutes and on their return discovered that tho articles mentioned in the charge were missing. Notlong ago Bronson was arrested on another charge and the Douglas's property was afterwards traced to him. ■ , Bronson was sentenced to two> months imprisonment. "SCENE" ON lULS. CORINTHIC. Walter Smith and Edward Matthews, seamen employed on the steamer Connthic, were charged with having damaged a cabin door and used certain language. In addition, Smith was charged with hav-' ing assaulted Macdoualdj Hnnter, . an officer of the vessel. The evidence against the defendants was to tho effect that they went to Hunter s caliin and made 1 certain demands, and that upon receiving the officers' answer, they endeavoured to break 'in the door, and called him by certain names. Smith, it was added, struck the officer. Each' was fined M for having used tho objectionable language, and was ordered to pay -£2 in restitution of the damage done. F,or the assault Smith was fined £2. ■
