Philip, Birmingham, who.has been uppointed to succeed Dr. Hcnson.as Unon of. Westminster-(with.'which goes the rectorship of St. Margaret's, Westminster), was born in'-1860, in Dublin County, but of Scottish descent. Mr. Carncgio had a brilliant career at Oxford. Ho 1 was ordained in 18S7, and worked as curt(to at Pudsey, in Yorkshire, and afterwards in the East End. In 1889 Lord Dudley presented him with the rectory of Great Witlcy, Worcestershire, and- whilo_;thcre ho did much diocesan work. . At Oxford Mr. Carnegio had been intimately i associated with Dr. Gore (then Bishop of Birmingham), and in 1904 ho was appoint-' el to' St. Philip's Church' Birmingham. Ho had to convert; St. Philip s into tho pro-cathedral of the now diocese, of; Birmingham, and became one of tho ; first honorary canons. Ho assisted Dr.iGpro in the prganisation of the dioceso, i laking especiallythe'superyision of educationand tho schools. Ho was responsible,for the origin of tho Church Education Society, and established, the Street Children's (Jmon for the benefit of tho child street tf.Jders, in connection with : which there'- aro -now seventy clubs, with many thousands of poor children/ in membership. Canon Carnegio has aleo taken a keen interest in Labour matters,- and,lid's spoken frequently on : such', topics, at dioeosaii: conferences. Ho. is, a good preacher, and often from his pulpit touches with.forco and eloquence .on public events., .During tho coal strike he delivered a' nlemorabjie sermon at Peterborough Cathedral, urging that tbo Church- should take her rightful responsibility- for establishing the Kingdom of God on' earth. Ho- is in sympathy with 1 modern-Biblical scholarship,'but takes a modcrafo and mediating position. Several books stand to his name, including' "Through Conversion to the Creed," "Tho Church and tho Schools," and "Chufclmianship and Character." . "'■'■■
