ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
• * ' MAN DROWNED. FATALITY AT' PAEKAKARIKt. Tlio police hiivo received word from, tlio railway authorities at Wellington to tho effect that a drowning fatality-occurred at l'ackakariki yesterday. From tho particulars available, it seems that threo men went out in a boat,- which capsized. Two of its occupants managed to get ashore, but tho third man, named Pcngally, is believed to have been drowned. Tho police were unable to supply any further particulars, save that tho man who is believed to be drowned was a fireman in tho employ of tho Railway Department. MOTOR-CYCLE ACCIDENT. AT.THORNDON. > A ratter serious motor-cycle accident occurred near tho Thorndon tram sheds yesterday morning at about 8.80 o'clock. A clerk named Chapman, in the employment of tho Tramway Department, had just alighted from tho freight-car at tlio Thorndon terminus, and on coming round tho rear of the car to approach the tram sheds, came into violent collision with a motor-cycle approaching from tho direction of Petone. Chapman was knocked down, and had his left leg fractured and his left wrist broken. Tho injured man was,, carried into tho tram sheds, whero ho was attended by Dr. Pattie, who ordered his removal to tho Hospital. The cyclo was ridden by a Mr. Patton, of.Hutt. i :.' A CARPENTER'S SUICIDE. '(By TeJairraixh.—Press Association.) \ Duncdin, February 18. Wm. Francis Debazin, a carpenter, 52 years of age, committed suicido by' hanging himself to n clothes post in his backyard in South Duncdin, at half-past five this morning. Debazin had been drinking lately, and on Saturday was charged at tho Police Court) with ' uttering a valueless, cheque for £b. His wife had paid back ,£4, and Debazin was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on condition that he paid the remaining £2, and took out a prohibition order. , Deceased was under tho influence of liquor on Monday evening. Tho .Coroner returned a. vcrdiot of suicido by hanging during temporary insanity. . ■ PURE ACCIDENT, > Duncdin, February 18. The inquest,on the body of John M'Lennan, aged 28, who died yesterday as tho result of injuries sustained at Patoaroa, on February 1, was held to-day.- v Tho medical evidence showed that when deceased was admitted to the hospital on February G he,was suffering from a double fracture of the lower.jaw, which was in a septic state. There was also a large' inflammatory mass on the\ right 6ido of the" neck,' and bruises about tho upper parte of the chest. Ho was. placed under the charge of Dr. Pickerill, and an operation -performed. The condition of tho parts affected was extremely septic, and from the continual absorption' ( of poisonous' matter he' 'gradually became worse,' and: died as a result of septic poisoning..' Deceased was unable to speak distinctly, and nothing could bo loarned from him as to how lie received the injuries. The cavity of tho mouth'was in a continuous septoo state," and owing to tho nature and location of the wound'it would be very difficult to; keep them in an anti-septio condition. Tho Coroner said that it was unfortunate that no one had seen the accident, but thoro was no doubt it'was pure accident, and no hlamo attached to anyone. Ho would find a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.
• WALKED HOME AND DIED. ~ Auckland, February 18.. • A Maori named Rcihana,' aged 70, was knocked down by a motor-car on a road near Taupo. Ho walked home, but subsequently, .expired.

Napier, February 18. Robert Carr, aged 21, a 6inglo mun, was drowned'in tho Tutaekuri River this morning whilst bathing. Deceased couid not swim, and got'into a hole. The body i\as recovered by another ■ man named Hanlon. Deceased was a\new arrival from,the Old Coj'itiy. ~ FIREMAN INJURED. •. Gisborne, February 18. A fireman on the Matatua, named Thomas John. Owens, had tho fingers of both hands mutilated this morning through being caught in a, wire rono running through a block. * ,'•''"'' THROWN FROM MOTOR, Lillian Ormond, a vocalist, who recently arrived • from Australia, was admitted to tho hospital yesterday morning suffering from several body bruises. It appears that she was thrown out of a. motor-car at Miramar. » : , KNOCKED DOWN. ' William Matthews, a traveller, need GB' years, residing at No. 11 M'Farlane Street, was knocked down by.a motor-cycle.in front of the Wellington Gas Company's buildings in Courtcnay Place shortly, after 5 o clock last evening. Ho. was taken' to the Wellington Hospital, where it was found that ho had two severe cuts on the -face, and was bruised, but no bones were broken. ■.''".'.
