-A STRUCK BY A TRAIN. (By Telegraph.—Frees Association.) Dunedin, February 17. Miss Ellen Turnbull, aged about 75 years, was fatally injured by the first express from the north between Waianakaru'a and Herbert to-day. The accident occurred just after the. train had passed a sharp turn on the down grade. Apparently deceased, who was somewhat (leaf, did not hear the driver's warning whistles, and before the train could be stopped she was struck. Sho was very 6criously injured, and died soon afterwards. BOY'S FOOT AMPUTATED. Auckland, February H. Getting off the train on Saturday at Now Lynn before.it had stopped, a little follow named James Morris, aged eight, fell between a carriage and the platform, and had his foot crushed. A lady who was travelling in the same carriage saw the lad's plight, and pluckily made a dive to pull him out of danger. She was just too late. The'boy's foot was amputated in the hospital. JOHN M'GEADY'S DEATH. Greymouth, February 17. An inquest was held to-day touching tho | death of John M'Gea'dy, whose body was j found on the North fieach on January \ 17. Tho evidence showed that deceased had been drinking on New Year's Day,j on which day ho disappeared. George*! Braidwood said ho had been told deceased was assaulted by a mnn named Phillip|3 on New Year's night. ■ Deceased was weaf+l ing a valuable gold chain, when last seen, which was missing when tho body was recovered. Tho inquest was adjourned. During the hearing one witness was locked up for appearing in court intoxicated. ——- • FELL OFF A DRAY. Dunedin, February 17. John M'Lellan, aged 28 years, who was admitted to the hospital on February 6, suffering from sevsre injuries sustained at Patearoa'on February 1, died this morning. It is surmised that he fell off a dray when crossing the water race. The accident resulted in deceased, being deprived of the power of speech.; : DEOWNED IN MILL BACK i Ashburtpn, February 17. The two-year-old son of A. D. Anderson, caretaker of tho Ashburton County Council's mill race intake, was drowned by falling into tho race, which 'flows past the caretaker's residence, on Saturday afternoon.
