THE JEWISH RABBINATE.

! BRITISH ELECTION: DR. HERTZ '■•..- APPOINTED. By Association-Copyright ■ Lcndon, February 16. Dr. Hertz, of New York, has been elected, Chief Rabbi of Great Britain by 298 votes. Dr. Hyamson secured 89 votes. The election to tho Rabbinate in sue cession to the late Dr. Adler, which has occupied the attention of the Jewish communities throughout England, was to have been solved on January 12, when the selection Committee of tho Rabbinate Conference were to meet at tho private residence of Mr. Leopold de Rothschild to nominate one of the three candidates who have come forward. It was since un» derstood, however, that the Selection Com. mittee had not como to an agreement, Not the least influential of the Jewish community was opposed to the candidature of Dr. .Drachman, strongly favouring Dr. Hertz's nomination. .It was 6aid that tho opposition to Dr. Drachman was due to his too rigid orthodoxy. He would allow himself to be nominated only by the whole of the committee, and would by no means enter into a contest with the two other candidates. Dr. Herlzand Dr. Hyamson. Ihe only solution possible, but not probable, was that the opponents of I)r. Drachman, who were believed to bo in tho minority, would convert his supporters to their views,—"London Times."
