FOR THE HOSPITAL.

£361 COLLECTED.

HOW THE WORK WAS DONE.

Pleasant weather on Saturday favoured tho efforts of the collectors who stationed themselves in the streets of the city to gather in funds for tho Hospital, and tho boisterous wind which was blowing yesterday afternoon did not prevent tho collectors being considerably augmented by crowds of peoplo who assembled to hear tho bands, which' provided special concerts in somo of tho city parks. Tho total amount collcctod, even when putstanding donations and Subscriptions uro added, will bo smaller than tho collection taken up eighteen months ago, but on that occasion a special appeal was made. Tho total in hand to dato on tho present occasion is ,£3Ol, 'and it is anticipated that boxes and lists which havejet to come in will raiso the 'Intel to over 4400.' .; Tho lady collectors who volunteered thoir servieci; were as. numerous as in former years, and no less enthusiastic. Some of tho collectors were at ihfeir stations os early as 7.30 a.m. on Saturday, and otliors declined to abandon their work until 10 p.m. Tho stations wero better distributed about the city than they liavo been in past years, and in this way anv, needless duplication of effort was avoided. All tho ladies were most enthusiastic in their work, and they reported .that, they were kindly treated everywhere. Refreshments ■ for the collectors werO provided during the day by Messrs, J, , Godber, P. Fnirbairn. (Occidental Hotel), and P. J. Griffin (Pier Hotel). Tho chairman of tho Hospital Board (Mr. James Trevor)-was out at 8.15 a.m. in his motor-car, and Was busily eimaged all day,in taking collectors to and from their stations, and otherwise assisting the work. Mr, F. T, Moore, a member of the " board, was also engaged with his motorcar in similar activities. Mr. J. Godber, car in similar octivties. Mr. J. Godber, the chairman of the Hospital Committee, and Mr. : 11. Baldwin, treasurer to tho board, also took on active part in the day's proceedings. This is tho second occasion on which the annual collecting campaign has been., organised end managed by the 1 ward's i staff, under Mr. J. Coylo (secretary). Mr. Coyle and his assistants liad a very brey time on Saturday night. The park collections yesterday were handled, by 'Mr. Coyle otidMr, Ij. H,. Fox, of the hospital staff. '. .

Tho Collections, : ~ Street collections on. Saturday, brought ia'.JGSSOO ss. .Sid;, and five More botes' hpva yet. to come*in. Tho Cliincso'Residents'. Association donated ,£7O 3s. Cd. Lojtps fromiho-vhrioiis hotels have also yet to bo opened, and-a number' of subscription lists have still to come in. The total amount from all sources was £698. This collection was made . eighteen, months ago, in Qctobor,. 1911, The date of this year's collection vraS advanced m order to avoid clashing with tho collection of tho St. John Ambulanca Brigade,. ; , . ; ' One.factor which reduced this year's collection was that no special appeal was mado to tradespeople, as they recently made very generous donations to i the 1 HoaJJital Christmas fund. ;i - i

A Satisfactory Result, Mr. J. Trevor (chairman of tho Hos. pital Board) told a reporter last evening that he considered the amount of thb collection very satisfactory. Ho added that' ho would like to express his gratitude to all who had assisted in making tho col. lection. The. collectors, he said, hail displayed the utmost enthusiasm, and had • worked early aud late. : .Silver cojns predominate in this TCar'e collections. There was a fair amount or copper in tho boxes,' but not as much as in previous years. One lady at Newtown. Park yesterday donated a sovereign, and thero were several half-sovereigns in tho i boxes. Some pcoplo gave sovereigns in mistake, for looms of smaller value, and on application hnd tho difference restored to thein, Tho alleged humour which find< expression in donations of buttons.' ivai little in evidenco this year. Ono bo:i was found to contain .flvo buttons, but .this was tho only instance of the kind.' ■ > A pathetic incident connected with the .'collection is the death of Mr. Archibald Of. Anderson, the artist who designed tho, posters with which the town was placarded prior to the collectibn, iind the postcards w;hich .on occasion were 'substituted' for tho badges which formerly wore issued by collectors to persons 'donating asshiU. ' ling or more. ; Mr. Anderson was admitted to tho Hospital on Friday night, and died on Saturday morning. ! , Ho. is described as; a journalist and commercial artist. Ho had lived in Wellington for. somo years, but hailed from Glasgow, and ; had no relatives in this country. For » number of years ho had Buffered from an affection of the heart. It may bo.inien-, tioried that his work'in designing the , posters and cards ivtis a voluntary labour, When his death became known there a great demand for tho cards,'
