NOTES ON THE RACING.'. 1 A DAY OFINQUIKIES. (By Teleffraph.—Spccial Correspondent.] , ■ :> New' Plymouth/ February 13. -_To-day was a day of inquiries, and tho 'Judicial Committee was kept going the .whole; time, and till long after tho last race had .been-run. .-First; of all, the doings in tho hurdle race were lqoked into, and after voluminous evidence had been taken the matter wa4 held over, and (the money on tho second horse was im- . -pounded! but Bercola's backers received their dividends'later on. The starter reported the , owner ,of Pirlwai for the alleged Use of. insulting'language to the •Assistant starter. A lot of evidence was ■.called'on botH sides, and.'this inquiry was not finished when this .The scratching of Lucerne,,' who injured , lor stifle; was a serious matter, and ioud complaints' were heard against, the rule .which prohibits the club from refunding the money. • v The attendance fell off considerably, but ithe racing was excellent, and some very. 1 close finishes resulted; " ■ ' _ Nos. 1, 2, and 8 were all evenly backed in the Hack Hurdles, in which there'was o sensational .happening,; At the start 'Aviatrii, -Proxy, and.Utehau led, with Timothjt five lengths away and then well back came Bercola and Mnlaphin. Otehau dropped back pas Sing. the stand, and the other pair continued on their way; Passing the.six furlongs, they' had a good_ break, which Meagher, on Timothy, then set about -reducing., At tho halfmile. Beroola was being ridden hard. There Proxy fell back, leaving Aviatrix ,to g<)-oil'alone. Sho. jumped the last fence well clear of Bercola,' Timothy, and •Proxy taking off together. Entering the straight, Young allowed her. to ease off, and Flynn, riding very hard, got up on the fence; .'and won by a neck. There - was a demonstration against Aviatrix, and the stewards were called together. Joc- ; keys Young, Flynn, had Meagher gave evidence,_and after an exhaustive hearing the inquiry was adjaurned till February

Patronale, with Deeley in the saddle, fade a good favourite in the Grandstand Handicap, but the result proved, that it was nothing like the good thinjj the machino suggested, nnd after being in front practically throughout/ the favourite only won by a neck. Cni\vi'or(l kept him [company for half a mile, when ho com* ipounded, but over the Inst bit Incur. f came very fast, and Patronale had to bu Kept doing his beat to score. Piriw-ii, ob lmtai, gim;,n lot of bother at tlio birjier, and Overtime was also a snurco of troiible, and between the .pair they delayed the start for a considerable time. There were only four runners in the Omata Hack Handicap. Passadena and Jackpin wero evenly backed, and in a lesser degreo were tho other pair. Jackpin flow out of the barrier, aud going down the • back had two longths' advantage, while the others wero being hard ridden. Chamiuado put in a good run right to the bend, andin tho straight ho maintained it, and wore down Jackpin. Passadena wna just dear of Silver Eosc. The winner in a good-looking half-brother to Clomora, nnd is likely to see a better da X- . The big Handicap was a very fast-run iaco', and went to Byron, with Dearest a length away, and a nock in front of lady Meruchikoir. The Souit mare was ft good favourite, with Lndy MenschikofF, Kina, and Byron, backcd in that order. At tho start Patriotic and Kina led from Dearest and Byron, but tho favourite was cut out passing the judge's box tho first timo, and lost her position. Down tho back tho order was unchanged, but tonnd the bend Ivina broke a blood-vessel Bnd lost his position. Patriotic and Lady Menschikoff wero first into the straight just clear of Byron nnd Dearest. Tito latter wa3 disappointed at tlio bottom of the straight, and Byron got to tho front, and "despite a good effort by Dearest., ho held his advantage to tlio post. Patriotic. Master Tupuhi, and Maniuvokaha .wero

the next to finish, while Undecided whip, peel in the Bold.

The withdrawal of Katua in favour of Master Sylvia made the latter favourite in the Open Welter, but he ran very badly, nud was tho last to fin- , -Royal Dragoon made tho play from Muleteer and Tirohanga till the straight was reached, when Aruake ran to the front very easily, and at the post he was a good two-lengths clear of Muleteer, who just beat Royal Dragoon. Kauroa and Tirohanga were the next to .finish. Minora, the half-sister to Lady Menschikoff,. was the best backed in tho mile Hack Race, and C. Emerson, getting her out well, was always in a good position, and won very easily. St. Luap, who made most of the running, was a, head in front of Rangikunua, with Conuev and White Crano in that order. The last-named is a very long-striding mare, and could not act on the circular course. Makara and Ineuru were withdrawn froin the Farewell Handicap. After doing her preliminary Lucerne, who promised to bo a hot • favourite, went very lame, and the" stewards allowed her to be withdrawn. Piriwai, with W. Young in tho saddle, gave no trouble this time, and the barrier rose to a beautiful start, Overtime, on the rails, was quickest to begin, but Rector ■ Girl joined her almost immediately, and in the run down the back she took charge, and was not again headed. Goldsize was a hot favourite,' but with Peroneal and Piriwai he ran in the rear the whold way. Tho Final Hack flutter of five furlongs produced a big field, with several of them well backed. Floss, by St. Clements, took charge, and won the whole way. Reflect, the favourite, stumbled badly at the bend, but was lucky then to get, a clear run on the rails and -secure second place. Another well-backed One in Squireen was third.. Silver Fox was close up . fourth, a neok in front o£ Kurnalpo. ■
