CHEMICAL RESEARCH.
TREATMENT OF NEON AND HELIUM. By Teleßraph-Prcss Asßocloiion-Oopyrlent (Keo. February 9, 5.5 p.m.) ' .London, February 7. Remarkable papers have been read before the Chemical' Society of London by Sir Wm. Ramsay, F. 8.5., Professor Nor-' man M'Leod (London University), ' and Professor H. Paterson (Leeds University), sotting out experiments by which neon ,and helium were obtained by an electrio discharge in a vacuum tube containing hydrogen, ; establishing cither tho transmutation .of these elements or the transformation of their energy. into matter,-
Neon. and helium aro two rare gases previously found chiefly .in the atmospbero and in the stars. They are chemically distinct. The suggestion of transmutation was first put forward by Professor Rutherford, who submitted that Tadium was changing into helium. . This was subsequently verified by Ramsay.
