NATIVE LANDS.
NO SHORTAGE OF SURVEYORS,
The Hon. W. H. Homes informed a re-' porter on Saturday evening that when, in a recont.statement, he mentioned a shortage of surveyors as an obstacle to tho settlement of Native lands, he was referring only to what had been the case in the past, and not to the position at the, present timo. ,'' _ ' , "I did not say," remarked Mr. Hemes, "that thore was a shortage of surveyors just now. There is no delay at the present timo in tho settlement of Native lands. Tho land is being put through ns rapidly ns possible." . ( . . The Native Minister mentioned also that tho present Government, when it camo into office, raised tho salaries of tho staff surveyors of the Survey. Department. The Nativo Land Department does not directly employ nnv survoyors. Survey work on Nativo landa for settlement is earned out either by staff surveyors of the Survey Department, or by private surveyors. Formerly the procedure preliminary to tho surveying of Native lands was very complicated, but it has been amended and modified by tho Government with a view to facilitating settlement. .Tins result, Mr. Herries stated, had'been, attained.
