FIFTY YEARS AGO TO-DAY,
To-day It will bo lialf a century 6inco tho most deplorablo wreck recorded in the annals of Now Zealand shipping—the Orpheus tragedy—occurred. Ib was on February 7, 1863, that the Orpheus reached the Sfanukau bar from Sydney. /The vessel took tho wrong channol, and with tho terrific, sea running at tho time the ship rapidly broke up; The small coasting bteamor Wonga Wonga (Captain Benner) was just leaving Onehunga, and recognising tho'gravity of tlio position, rendered •all tho liolp. in her i power. Taking two of tho ; warship's coats, which baa landed at tho pilot station, in- tow, and with tho pilot.on board, slio steamed as near as safety would permit, and saved a good number of lives, but 187 out'of tho txjtal on .board of 251 were drowned, including Commodore Barnelt. It is said that a: deserter, who was a prisoner ■ oh board, told those around him that 'a fatal mistako was being made in the navigation of the 6hip, but the warning wa» unheeded. ,
