OFFICERS FINED.
* Tho inquiry into tho matter : of the stranding of tho small 6toamer John near Napier on' December 18 concludcd last niglit. Ur. M'Arthur, S.M., presided, and Captains Gillespie and Black were with him on tho Bench.'
At the conclusion of tho evidence, Dr. M'Arthur said that tho Court was strongly of opinion that tho master of tho vessel ought to have' given written, instead of verbal,,instructions as,to tho course to bo steered, but that this was said chiefly by way of advico. They, considered tho first officer (W. H, Roberts) tho chief offender in tlio whole affair, and thought that tho second offioor (C., B, Atkinson) Bhould have—particularly oft6r2a.m. on' tho morning of tho wreck—dopo moro to eatisfy himself as to his course. Tho Court ordored tho first officer to pay .£3 Bs. towards tho tost of tho inquiry, and tho second officer to pay. £1 Is.
