..:', ___-4_: _'. ... _ DEMAND FOR INCREASED PAY.., Tho matter of tho' demands of, tho general labourers employed by tho City Council for an increase from Is. Id. to Is. 3d. per hour, which,' together with working conditions, was tho subject of a .recent conference between tho City Engineer (Mr. -W.-H." Morton) and Mr. M. J. Reardon (secretary of tho General Labourers' Union), was discussed at a meeting of tho Finance Committee of tho City Council yesterday, when Mr. Morton reported on tno result of tho conference. It is understood that an arrangement was arrived at between Messrs. Reardon and Morton, but tho latter official, took ,tho attitude that rates of pay did not come within his province to decide, and ho reported, to the council, tho rato of wages tho men were asking and why, as given by Mr. Renrdoni The committee caino to no (decision respecting a 'now rato of pay, but it was suggested that the case, as far as wages were concerned, might bo referred to tho Arbitration Court. : ,\
