IMPROVEMENTS AT THE-EMPRESS. . During the past year it. has been recognised by picture theatre proprietors, that the comfort of patrons must: be-made one of the first considerations. The, J. D. 'Williams Co. has recilisjd'this,' aiid ever since the Empress Theatre was taken Over improvements have/been gradually effected. These culminated, recently ■ in, the complete reseating of the ground floor, and rodecoration of- the whole theatre and entrance vestibules. Tho new scats, which range from the orchestral nit to the back wall of. the theatre, are exceedingly comfortable. Instead of the hard wooden tipllup scats,' leather upholstered spring seats,, ijwith' high, upholstered backs,"have.. been supplied.-. They ;are ; rt*omy and comfortable. ' Tho interior of the theatre has been transformed under the, supervision of Mr. Gc<irge'Coulter,,cf Sydney, the decorative artist," who has <'one much work ,for,the J.; D. Williams Co. iii Australia., Where cold, white, walh .were, there are. now handsomely, tonedi and stencilled panels, picked out in two restful tones of, palp green, and on either side of.the.audi-, torium are three handsome! ranel paintings of, beautiful'women in flowing draperies, picked out. in : warm tints.'. The. proscenium: hud CK.lhi.tr' 1 have' 1 -Wen very, 'artistically treated with pilt elaboration's,' which, brighten up the theatre considerably 'nrid remove* the formality of the white, plaster.; The converted walls of the vestibule^have been touched up with-deli-, .'cntely-painted impressionistic scenes', which proclaim Mr. Coulter an nrtist at •his -business. The-Empress may. fairly claim to bo one of the' most. attractive picture houses in.'the Dominion.
