THE AQUATIC GALA AT PETONE.
ANNIVERSARY DAY. RACE RESULTS AND NOTES. The unsettled weather conditions which prevailed yesterday morning, did not draw very many : people to the combined yacht clubs' anniversary regatta at Potone. Here and there about the wharf little bunches of people conversed as they watched the yacht races, and when the rain criiio on tlio place was well nigh deserted. boon after noon, however, bright sunsniuo teamed through the clouds, and a iiuio later the scene above changed from n canopy of black, ugly clouds, to one of bright blue. Thereafter tho crowd of onlookers visibly and steadily thickened. The Amokura was flagship, and lay alongside Petone-Wharf.' 1 .•.the light southerly air which prevailed .in tho morning was lmrdlv sufficient for tho yachts, and races for them had to bo put back for soma time, pending the arrival of Wellington's fleet. Just as the first-class yacht: race was about to commence, however, a welcome fresh southerly breeze sprang up, and all the yachts moved rapidly off, carrying all saU possible. The breeze kept up from 11 0 clock in the morning until about three in tho afternoon, when it began to dlo down. At 5 o'clock the wind veered to the north, and the last yachts to finish had to beat in against a northerly. Tho launch race between the Dusky Maid and the Waioue created, a great deal of interest. Both launches were built for speed alone, and much has been Said as to which was the faster of the two. Before the race the majority considered that Waione was the faster, but any doubt 011 the point was settled yesterday, when the Dusky Maid defeated her rival easily. The course was about 15 miles. .
