Tho fields wore ■ good, and pome closo finishes were, witnessed. Speculation on tho machine showed a slight decrease as compared with the corresponding day last year. Coming into tlio straight the field closed up on bir Moutoa, who, with Ruapara mid Simple Sam, were the most prominent. Whimper did > not jump well on the previous day, but scored a comfortable win to-day from Eiya. Serenity, the first day's winner, just beaten, out of a Slace. Whimper is now owned by xho nils'owner-trainer W. Homosi who also won the Telephone Hack-Handicap with Eminent. The latter had little to spare from Alecto. Lady Moutoa was expected to win the big race. She got out well and ran prominently, but the light-weighted-Matlow practically led throughout. Manawakaha, runner-up in the Cup, just bent Lady Moutoa for second. . • The Wairarapa-owned Operation—runner:up to Portraiture in the Maiden—was beaten in the Scurry by Artificial; a grey gelding by The Artist, ridden by. M. Hehir, who used to race Hinlitangi. Three of the later events were won by horses unplaced earlier in tho ' day. Vladinoy (Vladimir—Noyeau) scored in tho Carnarvon Hack Welter. The Blen-heim-bwned Ruapara (ridden by M'Cnrten) 'scored a comfortable win in the January Hack Handicap. There was heavy, speculation in the Moutoa Welter, which went to Muleteer.
