SAMUEL MARSDEN.
TRIBUTE BY BISHOP WILLIAMS.
Speaking at, the Anplican . general Synod on Monday regarding tho Marsden centenary commemoration, Bishop\Wiliams, who was received with hearty applause, said ho might claim that ho was the only person present who had set eyes on tho late Samuel Marsden. Ho remembered his last visit to hew- Zealand in 1837. Ho was then carried from Hokianga on a litter to his' Maori friends. The lato Samuel Marsden was a. most remarkable man. He would start out on foot. from; tho Bay of Islands to tho Thames, probably subsisting on fern roots and pipis. The state of things at that time was not such as to induce people io travel among tho Maoris for pleasure. He had, however, secured- thoir confidonoe, and ,_ that confidence was reciprocated by the white man. His ono desire was to benefit tho Maoris bv bringing the gospel to them. Bishop Williams said he heartily supported the motion, and if alive and fit ho would certainly attend tho celebrations at tho Bay of'Mands. '-~..-. •.; .
