DEFENCE.. .-■,- At the Wellington Farmers' Union meeting at Palmerston North on Monday, the Minister for Defence, in replying to the Farmers' Union, suggestion tllat the conscientious objector slioilld bo mado to do road-making instead of compulsory drill, wrote:—"That the new, Defence Bill made. provision for tho religious.objectors on fairly broad lines, but we cannot deal with, tho conscientious objector. It is tho mans own inner conscience that,has to deal with that. Tho kind of work wo are going to put.the religious objector has not vet been decided, but wo have in our jnind6 improvements to tho various towns and cities, and perhaps road-making would be very good for them."—"Manowfltd Times." ; .- ■ ; '.
