A DISAPPOINTED GANG.
ATTEMPT TO STEAL £80,000.

London, January 21. A gang of burglars spout tho week-end in an unsuccessful attempt to force- a, safo containing d£Bo,ooo worth of pearls in the office of Mr. Rubin, a jewel merchant in Holbofn, who owns pearl fisheries in West Australia. The gang were disturbed, and left .£6O worth of scientific safe-breaking appliances, including twenty cylinders of oxygen and acetylene. , ' Pour burglars arrived with a van after six o'clock on Saturday, and brought with them half a ton of' implements. . They entered the premises through unoccupied offices,' and erected a tont of American cloth around the safe to prevent the light showing. .. Tho burglars worked with blow-pipes on the safe for at least twelve hr.urs, .and only made a hole four by two inches. They were, however, within three inches, of a tray containing jewels worth .£30,000 when they hastily decamped. Tho .'thieves would have required to have drilled a second hole to have secured the .other iaO.ooo. They.loft popper, with which to blind intruders, . four ' pairs of silent boots, India-rubber gloves, and acid drops, to be used when their mouths were parched with the blow-pipes.
