WHAT THE WOMEN CAN DO. The meeting called by tho Mayoress for the - purpose of making lirmhgements ior tnu successful carrying out of the Easter Carnival now being organised tor tue purpose of gutherihg in funds for beautifying the'rescrves anil empty spaces in anu around the city was held in the Mayor's room of the Town Hall yesterday., afternoon. Unfortunately, the Mayoress was unable' to attend, and tho Mayor, Mr. M'Laren, presided at the gathering, between lorty and fifty ladies being present, as well as some of the organisers of the men's committees. Tho Mayor outlined t at some, length the obejets of the meeting. What they wished to accomplish that afternoon' was to form a Central' Ladies' Committee,
•om which various other working comlittees would be formed. He mentioned
the fact that other districts wero : anxious to know what Wellington was doing, so that, if successful regarding this Easter Carnival, they might work,along similar lines. . .■■■•./'
' leather Hickson, who was-the next speaker, remarked' upon the need for beautifying this city, although personally ho was rather proud of it, for it had been his homo for a quarter of a century, more or.lcss. In the past, our commercial instincts had been f allowed to hold' sway. Once, however, the interest of the people was aroused, they could work with great enthusiasm, as was witnessed in the hospital campaign. The assistance of the ladies was the ninjn factor in tho successful 'conduct of such an undertaking as the present one, and he invited the cooperation of those present, and that of those- ladies who were unable to attend the meeting that afternoon. .' ■ Mr. C. H. Smith outlined that part of the carnival which it was proposed to hand over to the ladies' committees—art' unions, fancy dancing, stalls, children's movements generally, refreshments, etc. He also spoke of wnat had been done in Christchurch, Invereargill,' and Dunedin for the beautifying of the cities, where even dust-Heaps had been made decorative. ■ A, resolution embodying the proposal that those present, with power to add to their numbers, should 'form themselves into a general ladies' committee in connection with; the forthcoming Easter Carnival, to be held for the purpose of raising funds for the beautifying of the city's reserves, was put to tne lneeting, and. carried. The General Committee, consisting of most of those ladies present, was formed forthwith. . '■■".'■••'■ The following officers were appointed;— President, the Mayoress, Mrs. M'Larcn; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. P. Luke, Corngan, Barber, and Firths executive committee, Mrs. Fletcher, Miss Helyer, Mrs.'-Falk Cohen,. ;Mrs. ; M'Villy, Miss Robieson, Mrs. W. B. Fisher, Mrs, M'Yicar, Mrs. Marsh, Miss Bland, Mrs. N. M'Lean,:Miss Cable, and, subject to their' consent, Mrs.; Chatfield and Mrs.'' Corliss. •• :..',. :
