THE UNIVERSITY.
CAPPING CEREMONIES. A WELLINGTON INCIDENT. I .' ' _ ; (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, January 20., Tho University Senate referred the portion of the Chancellor's address dealing with the conference of professors, arid its suggestions, regarding degree courses and examinations, to special consideration by the Senat'3 at a suitablo opportunity. Tho degree of Master of Laws was granted to Douglas Charles Chalmers, Auckland, the degree. of Bachelor of. Science to A. T. M*L. Blair, of Nelson; and tho degree of Bachelor of Engineering to P. H. M. Doonall, Dunedin;
Professor Hunter expressed the opinion that tho Chancellor's references to tho capping ceremonies were somewhat unfair to Victoria College. Tho occasion was purely a college affair, arid tho order was excellent, except in one particular where -the .judge of a contest was not permitted to mako a speech'before giving- his decision., Tho conduct of the Victoria Collego students had been exemplary at capping ceremonies. . : Tho' Chancellor said"' he was not present on tho occasion in question: Lord Islington,: who was present, expressed regret to him that tho gentleman who judged tlw contest had not been allowed tomake a speech. - ■
Mr. Hogbsn- thought that his Excellency must have been misinformed. Tho incident''was not worthy of the condemnation it had received by being classed with disorder at. capping ceremonies. '
The Chancellor replied that if gentlemen wero asked, to preside at oratorical' contests, and could not get a hearing, that was surely hot such conduct as ono should.expect from university students. .
This opinion was unanimously endorsed,. Professor Marshall said ho waa not present at the oratorical contest under notice, but was present at .the contest last Easter, *nd tho behaviour on'tho latter occasion was absolutely disgraceful. - The matter was referred to the committee for consideration. .
