SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.
Presentations. During the last few days Dr. John Rose and Mrs. Ross, who will shortly be leaving Waipawa, have been the recipients of S ~ es^ em '„ the "Hawko's Bay Herald. Oa Thursday evening Dr. Boss was met by the' Mayor of Waipawa and members of tho Borough' Council, and; was presented with a handsome Joather kit bag and a rug with carriers. The Mayor, Mr. W. I. Limbrick, made • the presentation, and ho, in addition to Councillors H. M. Rathbone, W. Pellow, and E. Bibby, expressed deep regret at Dr. liras impending departure, and appreciation of his past eervice3 to the district. On Friday evening Dr. and Mrs. Boss were publicly entertained. In addition to the beautifully-illuminated address presented to each of them, 'Mrs. Ross received a well-filled pnr-:e of sovereigns from, a number of friends, and the Mayoress, on behalf of the townspeople, also handed her a gold necklet with aquamarine pendant and a silver candlestick. On each occasion Dr. Ros3 replied-feel-' wgiy-. ' Ho referred to his eighteen yeare' stay in M'aipawa as the happiest time of his life, and expressed his wish to revisit th«p district at some future date and renew old acquaintances. A Point of Law. . - Dr. Alice M. Burn, a New Zealand lady doctor, who is now medical inspector for tho County of Durham, has just won her point in a.rather interesting incometax case. Dr. Burn went to England, t 1 ~ une diii seven or eight years ago to study medicine and public health.J P HS "P n< l remained in New' Zealand, and has been here ever since. When' Dr..Burn was approached for the payment of. income tax she, refused to {ay, on the . ground that sho was a married woman living with her husband," and this plea the Commissioners of Taxes have upheld. The contention of the appellant -was that, her .Separation from her husband was purely a geographical one, and could have no, legal consequences, i - C ™ wn intended : that she could not claim the exemption, since she was not "ving with her husband in actual fact. After hearing evidence and ai%Ument, the Commissioners decided that Dr. Burn was living with her husband, and that therefore sho is not liable for income tax. The Crown had intended to take the matter to the High Court, but tho Board of Inland Revenue has now deoided not to go any; further Needless to say, married women who are living with their husbands, in fact, are now thinking- of refusing to pay the tax. Dr. Burn was before this test case threatened with arrest and oommittal for"refusing to pay. : The City's Reserves; The Mayoress, Mrs. D. M'Laren, is holding a meeting this afternoon-in the Mayor b room,of tho Town Hall at 3.80, to consider-the arrangements to bo* made in connection i with the Citizens' Easter . Carnival.- It r is hoped that, Wellington women will attend in largo numbers for tho object of, the carnival, that of raising funds with which to beautify this sadly unasthetio city should make a strong appeal to them, tho lovo of beauty being naturally more ingTained in women than in men. . Owing to its situation, the possibilities of the city, for future beauty are undeniable, and labour spent in that direction is certain to meet with its just reward. In Chpistchurch and in' Dunedin much has been done in the way of making the' city beautiful with the planting and adorning (in every way) of the spaces in and around its areas, and in"all those efforts an enthusiastic part has been played iby the women of each city. ' To bo able to get away from tho dusty, noisy streets, from the monotony of tho ' everlasting house' walls, in tho midst of which so maay women (and children) spend their ; lives, to gool, green spaces among trees and flowers and shrubs, where the children can play to •; their hearts' content,' is a joy that is worth working for. Everyone attending the meeting is requested to bring friends with them, for the more women there are' who will take an activo interest in the carnival, the greater will be tho success that will orown their practical efforts in . the cause of beautifying the city's reserves.,.- - ■ ' I Miss Winifred lsitt returns to Dunedin' 1 to-day from her' visit to Wellington. Brooklyn, Wellington, 18th December, 1912, Door Mrs. Hullon,— For years I was tortured with superfluous hair on my face, and feared I should never rid myself of the distressing disfigurement. Being extremely sensitive, I suffered considerably, being often reminded of the fact, which I realised only too well. I tried several so-called cures, also spent a great deal of money on, electrolysis, but all to no purpose. In fact, X got, worse. Then I hoard of "Eusma," and, as a last resource, decided to givo it a trial, though having little faith of ever being cured. Imagine my surprise and delight on discovering that, with each treatment, the hair grow liner, until finally I wa9 cured. Spring Weddings—Brides' antf Bridesmaids' Bouquets of Fashion.
