THORNDON OLUB'S CARNIVAL.

At the Thorndon baths on Saturday afternoon, the Thorndon Amateur Swimming Club held its. annual carnival.

Weather conditions always have a big Bay in any femotion of this kind, and had they been a littlo better on Saturday the attendance would certainly havo been . larger. However, there was a good number of spectators present. During a short interval in tho programme the ohib provided a welcome of tea gratis to n u lv -h 0 were present. The carnival was a successful gathering, savo that it dragged a littlo towards the end. The handicapping was very good indeed, excont in one case, that of tho ladies' race. Perhaps it was difficult to handicap the ladies, as the handicapper rarely gets an opportunity of witnessing an exhibition bv them. Thq racing on tho.wholo was good, and there was plenty of competition in each of the events.' Rome swimmers oufeht to take up seriously the matter of swimming straight. There wire two or three instances on . Saturday in which the progress of competitors was effected by others getting in their track. •. The team which the Thorndon Club put up .to contest the Walker and Hall Cup was a hard one to beat, and it thoroughly . deserved its Win. The cup. has teen in existence for three years, and each time THorndon have been the winners. Swifts Club put up. a very promising, team,' which was only beaten by a 'stretch''of the i arm for second place by Wellington. Tho x 50yds. electric handicap race proved, very ■ exciting. Owing to the large number of • competitors, the event .was decided in ■ seven heats and a final; There were a gpod , number'bf competitor* in the diving com- : potition, which was won by Arthur, with Hicks, second. It took the judge some time to decide the event, and • the two placed youths had to dive off twice before tho winner was decided. Probably, they would have had to try .again, had Hicks • not dropped his legs when striking' the water. Both made very neat flights, Ono or two comic items amused the spectators for Some time, .. ..
