G. W. Frajer, purser and steward-iri-chargeThe Turakina left London on November 28, an'd Plymouth two days later.. Fine weathcV was. eiporienced on, the run to Tcnsriffe, which port was reached on December. .5:, Tho. voyage was continued.again next morning, coaling ship and ombarking , passengers and mails. Light trade winds, with fair wMther, were met . with fo the equator, which was crossed on December , 12, and until about a week before arrival at Capo Town.. Strong easterly, trades then caused a high and dangerous soa. and it was neceaary. to reduce the' speed to about seven knots.... Arrival was made at Oipe Town on December 22, and departure taksn at 10 p.m. tho, same day. Fine, and favour-' able weather waa experienced in' orossing the Southern Ocean, and no ice was; met with. The .Turakina arrived at Hobart on January 12, and left for Wellington on the final stage of hesr long .journsy at 6 am. on Monday, January 13. GISBORNE-NAPIER FERRY SERVICE. The advantage to Gisborno of the ferry service performed by tho Takapuna was further instanced on January 15 when that steamer arrived with a full passenger list, having Brought on passengers and mails from the Mokoia, which was detailed at Napier owing to her propeller fouling a liawaer. Arain, the reimo evening the ferry steamer took on to Napier passengers who would have been unablo to connect with the exprofa (it Napier had thev waited for tho Moara, which was late in arrival from Auckland. The continuity and regularity of tho mail service given by the Takapuna is much appreciated by Giehorno business poople and a strong effort is being mado to have tho steamer retained permanently in the running. Tho Union Steam Ship Company of Now Zealand is closely studying the development of tho intcrnal-combustion engines of tho Polar-Diesel type, and tho announcement is made that the construction of an oxperimontol vessel equipped with the new system is being seriously considered. The Union Company was tho first to adopt the Parsons tui'bine, and it would not bo surprising if the construction of a vessel equipped with intcrnal-combustion engines fs undertaken by that company ,at a very early date 1 .
