SURF FATALITY AT DUNEDIN,

TWO MEN LOSE THEIR LIVES.

Duncdin, January 19. A tragedy occurred at St. Clair yesterday afternoon, whereby two 'men lost their lives. The weather was very hot, and light rain showers occurred at intervals until well on in the afternoon, when a large number of people indulged in surf-bathing at St Glair and St. ICilda. Among those at the former placc were Joseph Clarke and Charles Win. Turvcy, and both men, who are believed to havo been good swimmers, go): into difficulties shortly after 4 p.m. Owing, it is supposed, to tho strong back wash, they were carried ,out some distance, and though prompt assistance was rendered by the Life Saving Club it was too late, as both were dead when got out of the water. Efforts to resuscitate them wero carried on for a long time, but without avail. Clarke, who kept a boot shop in South Dunedin, was 43 years of age. Ho leaves a Widow and two children. Turvey', who was a commercial traveller, residing in Coughtrey Street, St. Kilda, was 28 years old, and also leaves a widow and two children, one .aged four, years and tho other three. Another man got into difficulties at the samo time, but managed to get ashore. , A TOO VENTURESOME SWIMMER. DROWNED AT GISBORNE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Gisborns, January 19. An unmarried man named Daniel M'Carran, alias M'llray, was drowned in the surf on the Waikanae Beach on Saturday. He . swam out with a friend 150 yards beyond tho breakers, and tho friend. returned after counselling M'Carran not to go further; A\few minutes later-M'Carran (then 200 yards out) was seen to throw up his hands and sink. Some bathers proceeded out, but could not locate the uody, which was washed up in tho surf fifteen minutes later. Artificial respiration was practised and medical aid procured, but life bad to bo pronounced extinct. ■ 1
