j .KILLED BY "A' FALL OF PAPA, (By Telegraph-Press Association.) ■n , _ VVanganui, January 19. Frank Baillm, a single man about 28 years of ape,- was killed at Ahuahu, about 30 miles up the river, on Saturday afternoon, j Ho and two mates, named Clark and Larkin, were. -working on a six-foot i track, when about ten tons of papa aval,inched down from a height of about twelve feet. Baillie was working in the centre, and had no chance of escaping. He fell on his faco over the bank, and with, 1 a few groans nil was over. The party carried the body ten miles to the To Tuhi landing, whence it was brought into town by a motor launch this afternoon. The body was shockingly injured. This gang seems to be singularly ill-fated. A fourth momber, John Brady, was drowned the previous week, and one of the surviving two only recently came out of hospital, whero a badly-cut foot had been doctored. CHILDREN PERISH IN FLAMES. Auckland, January 10. A fatal fire at Wnitangurn, 30 miles west of To ICniti, occurred at 4.J0 o'clock this morning, two children of tho postmaster, Walter Jones, being burnt to death. One of tho boys was 2} years old, and tho other 17 months, and they were tho only children. It is surmised that tho fire was caused by bush, fires, which are numerous in the district. COURTENAY PLACE ACCIDENT. John George Cockren, a carter, residing at 51 Cambridge Terrace, was leading a liorso in Courtenay Place on Saturday evening when tho animal plunged anil threw him. Ho was bruised about tho face, and had ft bad cut above tho eye, but no serious injiivy was sustained. Ho was attended by Dr. Henry at tho Manricrg Street Police Station.
