Auckland, January 19, The Canadian-Australian mail steamer Zealandia arrived at, Auckland yesterday from Vancouver .and Island ports, offer a passage which was much moro eventful than those usually recorded by lio steamers of the line. Departure was taken from Vanoouver op Christmas Day, and all went well till when off Cape Flattery at 8.30 p.m. on December 20. A. gale then blew up from the south-west, and tho wind increased in force as tho day wore on, and, continuing through, tho night, was blowing with! hurricane force ,on the next day. Tho gale was accompanied by heavy head seas and blinding rain squalls. Heavy breakers pounded ou the decks, and one particularly heavy sea broke a length of railing on the forward part of the' bridge dcck. Further than this, however, no damage was done, and tho Zealandia rode out tho 6torm in fine style. , • ' • ■ ■ On January 1, when about 240 miles from Honolulu, a mishap to the starboard engine made-it necessary for the steamer to complete l tire passage to port on : one engine. On arrival at Honolulu tho following day, it was decided that the steamer should remain in port till repairs hid been oarried out. , The stay of three days was thoroughlyo'tmjoyed*by tho pos6engors, who were ablo to inako a thorough tour of the beauty spots of. the island. ' The Zealandia was tho first vessel 'to .hear of the mishap to tho Spreokels Sari Francisco liner Sonoma. Ono: message, received at 8 p.m. on Wednesday last, gavo "All well." but later in the evening Captain Phillips received another message 6tating, that at 8.35 p.m. tho Sonoma had broken \ her tail shaft, and the propoller was hanging. The Sonoma 6ent anotlior message on Thursday saying that it was hoped that the necessary repairs would bo effected at' Pago Pago. ■
