Tho court of directors ot tUo lioyal Humane Society met this afternoon, wnen tno tollowing cases wero considered :— Case of Kobcn Davidson (Sit), lor rescuing (jraco Davidson t'lyrs.), and also a buy iroui drowning at Woolsion du Uctober 31, 1912. ( Bishop; We were certainly surprised to receive such an application, for a man could not do less than what ho did.
Tho chairman: The fact that ho saved his children's lives should bo his reward. ,
It was decided that no award could be made.
Caso of James Knowles (82 years),' for rescuing Michael Clearkiii (45)-/front drowning at JJapicr on October i, 1912. It was decided to grant a certificate. . - Caso of John liobertson (27 years), for' rescuing Frank Moore (12 ■ years) from drowning at Urcywo.utli on February: 17, 1912. A silver medal was granted. Case of Virgil Edwards, for rescuing Henry Berthold (14 years) from drowning at Eoxton on September 7,. 1912;—Erauibd certificate granted.
, Case of Timothy Herlihy (30 years) for rescuing Daniel Murphy (22 years) from drowning at Waikara on August 7, 1912.— Decided to defer the matter pending receipt of further information.
Au application was received on behalf of Miss Marjorie Potter Townend, for rescuing Olive Haynes from drowning intho Okutu Itivcr, near tho Whito Hock Homestead, on January 3—Decided ; to defer consideration pending further evidence, • ! i■.
Case of Te Nga Ole (8 yeans) for at-; tempting to rescue. . Wireniu Hani (10 years) irom drowning at. To Pnraki on October 25, 1912.—Decided to forward a scini-ofnoial letter of commendation.
Gold Medal to Solomons. ' ; An application was received on behalf of Lewis Solomons and Harry M. Hay, both of Sydney, for attempting to .'rescue, Mr. Bathurst,; at Suinner, on December 28. It was stated in _ the -application thAt. Solomons, on hearing that a man. was in trouble, cycled along' Sumner, beach i for about 400yd5.,, plunged into tho breakers, and, quite unsupported, swam • out a considerable, distance, and dived four or iivo times into a depth of twenty to twenty-four feet of water ,to find the-body, but was unsuccessful.' Hay supported him later with a life-line.'' Tho application was considered in committee, and it was deoidod to award a gold medal to Solomons and a silver- medal to Hay. Caso of Alexander Barron (11 years), for rescuing Edward' Dyer (6 years)! from' a railway accident; at New Lynn, on 'November 19, 1912.—Bronze medal and framed certificate' granted. ; ■ Jumped in Front of Train. , i Case of .Benjamin Trumper (19 yearß), for resouing J. Brown (38 years) from accident,at Timaru on March 20, ; 1912.— : Tho* official report mentioned' that as the second express, bound for Christchurch, was coming'into Timaru Station a man, who appeared to be under tho influence of liquor, stepped off- the - platform on 'to tho main lino, and,-if it ha,d not beon-Jor the prompt- manner in which.' Porter Trumper lumped on to tho main lihopre--gardlessnof hi? owa.life,.and.lpnUoaVihihi' clear of "the incoming train, there would have been a very serious accident, especially if the man had attempted to struggle with Trumper.—A bronzo medal was awarded.- , ~
