Vesty won the 100 yds, handicap, and R. M'Kenzio tho 410 yds, hurdles. Thei'Masterton C/cle Club hold a.threomile raco on the Park Oval. This was won by A. Pernck, of Carterton, oil tho '-10yds.- mark. The Masterton branch of the T.M.C.A. and combined Bible classes hold a successful picnio on tho Solway showgrounds to-day. I Masterton, January 17. "Messrs. Dalgcty and Co., Ltd.. report having sold, on account of Mr, J. A. Judd, of.Tand, his freehold^property of 652 acres, to Mr. William O'Donnell, formcily of' tho Waikato. A young man named Francis O. O'Connor, whoso caso has been before the:court for some time, he being charged" with failing to tender tho service requiied under tho Dcfenco Act, was tl|ls morning fined 10i, and costs. Mr. }j. G. Roid, S.M., held that there had acquiescence' on the part of tho d'fendant in 'his enrolment as a Territorial. C. S. Simmonds, who did not appear, was fined IC*., and costs, for absonting himself from a Territorial parade. On a similar charge, R, Mclvin, R. Wooding, H. Messenger, G. M'Kenzic, and G..' Wood were 1 cacli convicted and ordered to pay 7s. lOd. costs. Williard Robinson, who had failed to. attend'a single parade, was fined 20s, and 7s.' costs, and Joseph,J. Ewington, who had previously been fined, nas mulcted in-205., and 7s. costs. A chargo against Thomas. Harris of refusing to toko tho oath of allcgiauco was withdrawnj ho having, agreed .to comply with tho requirements of tho Act. "If 'you are out to defy the Act," said Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., to a, Territorial who appeared before him this morning, "you'll find it docs not pay." Mr. Reid pointed out that, under tho Act passed last session, a military defaulter could bo sent to detentiou barracks and deprived of,his ciul rights for a period up lo ten years. . A negro named Thomas Timmo was 'nncd 40s and cosls this morning on a chargo of bringing liquor into a NoLicense area for one vida Clancy, without informing the \cudors of tho tho person for whom tho liquor waß intended. He was al=o fined 205., and costs; on a chargo of attempting to deliver liquor to Vida Clancy without having tlio parcel addressed. A third chargo against the defendant of keeping liquor for salo was dismissed. Phillip Juno, _ft blacksmith, was charged with obtaining live doion bottles of beer without informing tho vondor that it was intended for consumption in a No-Licenso area, and with keeping liquor for salo Tho cvidonco showed that Juno went to Carterton in a motor-car. After unsuccessfully cndeavounng to procure n supply of liquor at two hotels, to went with a man named O'Reilly to a brewery denot. O'Reilly ordered and paid for flvo oW of Leer, which was p accd in the motorcar and brought to Juno's house in Masterton. Tile defence was that the liquor v,as brought to Masterton for O'Refc. His Worship dismissed tho chargo of keeping liquor for sale, though he slated that ho circumstance* were suspicious. On ho charge of obtaining liquor, Juno was ; fined. JK and costs. . Harvesting is now in_ full siring. In a few caces the grain is Mm thrashed from tho slock, but tho majority of farmere are slacking.
