Since the recent sad drowning fatality at Aohonga (states the Wairarapa "Age'') the Maoris have tabooed the whole of the const as far down as Castlopoint, and fishing will not be engaged in for at least two years. • Mr. W. Furness, workshops foreman to the Post and' Telegraph Department, returned to Lyttolton last night from the Chatham Islands, where he went to make preliminary arrangements for tho erection of o wirolessstation. It is expeoted that material for the station building will bo eont down to the Islands about a month hence. ' ■ \ The Publio-Trust Commission, _ which has been sitting in Wellington during the past week, has examined numerous witnesses and has also spent some timo in oxamining the methods of the Department. So far nono of tho witnesses hnyo come from outsido Wellington, but a number of witnesses from various parts of tho Dominion are expected'to appear before the inquiry terminates, 'it is considered that there aro good prospects of completing the inquiry within the time granted to the Commission which expires on February 10. It is understood that the Commission adheres to its intention of restricting its sittings to Wellington. Announcements of Sunday services will be found on page 2 of this issue, •'
In a letter which wo published from him yesterday, Mr. M. Myers made a quotation from Lord Halsbury's "Laws, of England," Tho passage, as printed, read: "If. they (that is, the Justices) decido to grant process on an information, they have a discretion as to whether they will issuo a summons or a warrant, but it is not usual or advisable to issue a warrant in tho first instance except in cases where a summons may be expected to be discharged." Tho last word, "discharged,' is a typographical error, Tho proper word is "disobeyed." ; •
A lady passenger from Westport overland to Christehurch ono day last week (states the Tima.ru "Herald") must have nut up something like a record for travelling from that town, Leaving Westport early on Monday morning by motor, sho arrived in llecfron in time for the train to Groynioutli, caught the Otira train at Stillwater, and arrived in Christchurch the, same evening at 8.30' o'clock. .

No date has yet been fixed for. tho calling of tenders for the new Parliamentary Buildings. The Hon. W. Eraser Btated yesterday that certain preliminaries have c still to bo gone through beforo tenders can be called. As soon as these preliminaries havo been, settled, contractors will bo invited to tender without further delay. Tho Minister added that 'thero was no absolute hurry, as it will take a llttlo longer than was expected to finish tho foundations. They will not bo ready for building for about, two months. The postal .authorities advise that tho s.s. Victoria, which sailed from: Sydney at noon on January 15 for>Auckland, has on, board an Australian mail. Tho Wellington portion is due to arrive- here by the Main Trunk express on Monday next.
