TREATMENT OF CONSUMPTION.

V-. ■ -..,-■,. » •.:-:■-■ - WILVT AUCKLAND IS DOING: .^.' . (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.)- ■ ; ' . Auckland, January ■ 17. . Tlio _ Hospital Board yesterday spent some time in considering plans which havo. been prepared, for tho Hospital for Consumptives, which is to be built at Tamaki.: A few weeks ago an area of the Knox Estate was acquired, comprising about 30 acres, at" a price varying from .£SO to £M per acre.. Tho site is considered to be: an. excellent, oho for the purpose, .and lies close to the Tamaki River. The plans submitted to tho board at its meeting yesterday by. the .architect (Mr. Allsonp) provided for a thoroughly up-to-date institution, with afino administrative block,. and every provision for the comfort and treatment of patients. The estimated cost was .£17,000. "■••.'• • A long discussion took place, and while it was admitted that'an institution on the basis outlined by the board's architect was very desirable, it .was also felt that the cost was more than the board would at present caro to undertake. Members were alsj unanimously-of opinion that no time should be lost in making provision for the treatment of consumption patients, tmd a general discussion indicated'that members considered the best policy for the board to pursue would bo' to spend £5000 in ' building a small administrative block for the use of doctors and nurses, and in erecting shelter colonies for male and female patients. Such an expenditure would in this way be sufficient to meet tho requirements of from 30 t0.50 patients. • At the present time there are ten persons in-fhe Auckland Public Hospital suffering from tuberculosis,-and,nine'at the Costley Home. It ',is felt that: it is high time that these institutions- sjiould be freed from, tho necessity of taking in such cases, and it is likely that within the next few months the new institution at Tamaki will bo an accomplished fact. A meeting of tho lioard will be held on Tuesdny, at which the InspectorGeneral, Dr., Valintine, will also bo pre : sent, ■' ' -
