His Excellency will hold a levee on tlie afternoon of January 21, and the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr) is endeavouring to arrange for the presentation of the address to take placo in the. morning at .the Town Jlall, lie has tele-, graphed to the Governot''a private secretary with a view of making definite arrangements.
The personal staff of. his Excellency tho Governor (Lord Liverpool) is formally gazetted—Mr. Gavin Macaulay Hamilton to be private secretary; Captain Charles Shawo (Rifle Brigade) to bo military secretary; Captain Thomas Ralph Eastwood (Kiiie Brigade) to'be aide-de-camp, .
The Primo Minister left by tho midday express yesterday for To Myamutu and will be iu the Auckland district for about a fortnight.' Tho' Hon. Ei 11. Rhodes left for Rotorualast evening. Tho Hon. Tho appointment of Mr. U. F. Maccabees Vico-C'onsul of Russia at Wellington, with jurisdiction over the provincial district of Wellington and RarotOnga, and Mr. - J. Paterson as Vice-Consul of Russia at Auckland, with jurisdiction over tho provincial districts of, Auokland, •' Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay, has been recognised by. tho New Zealand Government. 1 , Mr., J. H. Enright, as Vice-Consul of Norway,'at Westport, is provisionally recognised.
On Tuesday, night tho staff' of tho Now. Plymouth Post 1 and Telegraph Office met in full strength to say farewell to Mr. A. P. Dryden on tho occasion of his leaving to tako up the position of Chief Post master of the Wellington district. A proeentation of plato was rondo to Mr. Dryden by Mr. Gee, Acting-Chief Postmaster, on behalf of tho staff, who referred in culogistic terms to Mr. Drydcn's past services'to the Department, 'and expressed the belief that, his; transfer to,; tho now position would prove of advantage to to Wellington district. Tostimony was also borne by tho Chief C)?rk and tho executive officers of tho various branches of the local office to the good work dono.by Mr. Dry.don while Chief Postmaster at Now Plymouth, and to tho respect felt by tho officers ,of the staff for his personality and abilities, and a general wish was expressed for tho welfare and happiness of Mr. and Mrs. Drvden in' their new ■ homo. Mr. C. H. Mr. W. S. Short, Assistant'Under-Seo-retary for Public Works, is to leave at tho end of this month on a visit to Australia where ho' will spend !about two months in inspecting the various systems of carrying out publig works adopted in tho, different States of tho Commonwealth. Mr; Philip Hereford, a well-known Iccturer on evolution, who is touring the Dominion, has arrived in Wellington;
The many friends of Mr. C. Douglas, secretary of tho Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society and also the Napier Chamber of Commerce, will (says the Napier "Telegraph") sympathise with him in the news of the death of his father, the R.ev. Qeorgo Douglas, of Edinburgh, at tho age of 73 years. The dooeased gentleman paid a visit to Now • Zealand last year, returning homis in April after an extended holiday in Napier. During his stay in: this town. Mr.. Douglas iinado the acquaintance of'a large number of persons, and on one occasionlie took tho services at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Deceased died at his temporary residence at Moffati. Scotland, but.from what cause it is not known.
