" ' 1 ' "V , ' (By Teleff.'aph.—Special Correspondent.) Mastcrton, January 4. About :one inch of rain fell in this district on Wednesday and Thursday. This has had a splendid effect upon the pas■tares, and has given the rape and turnip, crops a good start. • Harvesting operations are now-in full swing, and somo splendid crops of oats are reported. A ! considerable, quantity of ■ this grain is being converted ' into oaten sheaf. Shearing, on the larger stations, is now practically completed. A few of the smaller stations have still, however, to cut out. /. •Hawke's Bay peaches aro now being retailed in tho streets of Masterton at 3d. per pound. , ' Wool continues to pour into tho tho Masterton railway station. Extra , trains aro b<;inp run to c'opo with the'-heavy wool ancf sheep traffic.. .: ; There aro at present twenty-six pa", tients in tho Masterton Hospital. An outbreak of scarlet fever caused a rush' "of patients to the fever ward of the institution during ,<last' month, but there are now only two such patients in- the hospital.' ; ' At a meeting of the committee' of tho Wairarapa Swimming Club last night, it was reported that matters in connection with tno aquatic carnival to 1m held on January 22, werp well advanced, and that, record, nominations were expected. 1 Tho visiting "nomad" cricketers .were entertained, at a smoke concert'in the Club Hotel last evening.
