TROTT & HIS MEN.
DUNEDIN MATCH. MELBOURNIANS SCORE 227- • SLOW BATTING. OTAGO PLAYERS OPEN WELL. (By Telcjraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, January 1. Play in the match South Melbourne v. Otago was commenced at -Carisbrook this afternoon under perfect conditions aiid in tho presence of a fair crowd of spectators. Trott won tho toss and took advantage of conditions which were almost perfect, the wicket being an ideal o'no from a batsman's point of view, and the outfield true and fast. . ' Tho South Melbourne captain opened with Sykos and himself, to the bowling of Burned on and Rutherford, the veteran attacking the bowling from t'he outest. ■The first 40 was brought up after 20 minutes' play by Trott square-cutting Rutherford to tho rails. Sykes was showing fine form on, the leg side, and tho pair brought up half a century after 30 minutes' batting, but with the total at 60 Sykes played one sharply to M'Farlano at point, and it was held. The outgoer had played several very nice strokes, showing a 6trong partiality for tho leg glance. Scott partnered Trott, who was still batting well, but the new batsman presently hit Ramsden up to' Higgins, who ran in . from mid-on, and secured a slowly-drop-ping catch. With two down for 61, Gillor filled tlio vacancy, and Huntly, bowling off theory, worked Giller across, and then ssnt down a straight one, which got him leg-before, and three wickets were down for 72. Kenny came, in and Trott' brought up 80 with a leg snick. Tho Melbourne captain was now hitting but merrily, and putting fine rower behind his strokes, and 100 was in sight after 70. minutes' play. At 105 Siedeberg made another change in his bowling, Bannerman going on vice Ramsden, and with his first ball finding tho . way to Kenny's wicket, lvyle came in, and with the total at 108 tho end of Trott's career camo, Bannerman clean bowling him, tho veteran playing right over a straight one. In his 6Core of 61 he hit ten fours.; ' M'Cormack came in, and after compiling three survived a confident appeal for a catch by CondlilFeat the wickets. At 147, however, Kyle was out l.b.w. to Rainsden, and Deas joined MlCormack, and quickly ran into double figures, after which ho was clean bowled by Seideberg, . who had replaced M'Fai'lhne. Gray' was' the incomer, and; presently 6aw M'Cormack lose his wicket by a smart catch in tho slips by Condliffe, off Seideberg. - L , Kelly joi'acd Gray, and 200 was reached .after two hours and a half's pLay. Gray had'been at the wickets for 38 minutes for his 6ooro of 12, when he was caught ■ by. M'Farlano at first slip. At 5 o'clock tno last man, Pentland, joined Kelly, who had bean playing 6olid cricket. The new batsman, was not allowed to stay long, bringing about his own dismissal by playing one softly fr6m Huntly to Hopkins, who ran in from mid-olf, ond effected an easy catch. ' The batting of, the visitors was disappointing, considering tho perfect conditions aind comparatively weak bowl- . ing of Otago. At 5.20 p.m. Hopkins and Tuckwdl went out to open for Otago to the bowling of Trott and Kelly. Both men scored freely by strokes. Unfortunately just on G o'clock, in the last over, Hopkins played ono from-Kyle .into the'hands of Scott, in the .slips, whiro a trap had been set for him.'Scores':— \ . . ..
