Messrs. Whiting Bros.' mining Tcnturo in Australia is roported to bo not so Wright as was, anticipated, and tho owners luivo had considerable bad luck in various ways. Mr. J. Whiting, who has been hying "near tho scene of tho mines, in Victoria, sinco his departure from Australia, has been singularly unfortunate. One child was very ill recently, and almost succumbed to an attack of pneumonia, ,whilo another lind a leg broken by o. falling tree. Mr. J. Whiting-is now farming in Australia. Mr. Cling. Whiting, who lias' resided at Levin sinco his departure from Paraparaumu, recently returned from a visit' to Australia. Ho and hia family intend to settle down at Tauranga, where they have secured d nice section for a liomo and orchard. As tho result of hilarity a window-pane was broken during tho journey of the evening train from Wellington on Wednesday night, causing Constables Sathorloy and . Bagrie to make an investigation. Several young man wcro 'questioned, but deniod all knowledge of tho 'affair 1 . Tho ofllcora of the law threatened proceedings, which' had the effect of causing one of tho men to pay for the damage. ■ . They report haying had' a pleasant and profttablo timo. ' A party of seventeen people, chielly ladies from Wellington, also ascended the hill, undor the guidance of Mr. •' Atkinson. -On ■!
