NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph.—Special Oorrcepondcnt.) Palmerston North, January 2. The Marlon meeting concluded in fine weather, and before a good crowd. Speculation was again very heavy, and the club established u totalisator' record for its oourso. The train arrangements on bcth
days were wretched; and if tho club wishes to retain its popularity with tho racing public it will have to see that quickor transit is available for its patrons. Tho special to Palmerston North was sidetracked for half an hour at Greatford, owing to tho presence of another train on tho line which was running late, or clso tho tame-tablo wa9 bungled. As a matter of fact, a much earlier 6tart 'should have been made from Morton Junction, and this would havo enabled a crossing to havo teen mado further down tho lino..
Practically tho 6amo field, with the addition of Bonny, started in tho Hurdles to-day. The heavy rain overnight had taken the jar out of the going, and this greatly favoured Rcndrock into first choice. Ho was at tho tail of a strung-out field for a rails, when ho raced to the front and won very comfortably. Strategist was ten lengths away, and then came Knutsford, with M&hiniwa. and Trcckor last. Bonny fell nt the fence in front of the stand, and H. Futcher had his wrist broken., v ; v
Lord Possible closed'up a better favourite than Makara in the Telegraph Handicap, with tho others evenly „ backed. Makara's rider was very busy at tho barrier, and suedeeded in getting out well, but Vibration headed him round tho turn,, where Makara ran ,wide, and Lady Louisa, with Eill ; got un on tho inside. Entering the straight, Vibration took tho field out, and Pinwai closed up, but Blie had not pace: enough to reach Rill and Lady Louisa, who fought out a good finish, and were separated by a head only at the post.; Lord Possible'was fourth, and"''on his'finishing run it looked as if he should have ttoh but for commencing slowly. ;i
. According to tho totalisator only Passadena ana Heather had a chance in, the Flying Hack, and the result proved''the correctness of. the tip,; for tho pair finished locked together,' and with only u head between them.' Sepoj' made. the running to the turn, where Hamurana was also prominent, but' at the finish only, the'two favourites 'had & thancii. Heather appeared to have' lightened- up n trifle as the result of, her first 'day's ra'co," but Passadena -liorb a bright appearance.
Waipaku was the only withdrawal from the big handicap, in which Sea Queen started a hot favourite, : She was un - liicky enough; for her bridle to come off stiou : after: the start, and her rider was ©impelled to pull' her up. When they sjittled down, Byron and Seatondalo were ill charge, with Dearest and, Manakaii next, -lho latter pair took cliurgo across tha hond, ; but. at. the' bottomof the straight. Dearest was done with, and her place was'taken by /Mescal, followed by Master Luddo. Mestjal .threw, out a 1 strong challenge. to • Manakau, but the rider of the black liorso rode' a good finish, and won by a neck. Master Laddo was two ' lengths away. It was a - fast run race, '.and the con* dition .. of /Manakau , and . his " lightweight carried him first past'the. post. Plate,• looking .as fresh as paint, and ridden by Mr. Dindsay M'Donald, was: made a good favourite: in the Bracelet, which she won comfortably from Whimper. The latter was badly placed in -the/early-.part of the t race, but stuck well to his work at the finish. Lady Ruby' made the pnee'for half a mile/ when the favourite ran through on- the' rails and won anyhow. After the' race the owner •of. the mare, Mr. 'J. O'-Meara was' presented with the Bracelet ,by the president of the club,-Mr. It. Aldworth, who called, for cheers for the. mare. . ; ■/■■'■ :° The public could not. decide between Chief Marshal and Siri ; Daniel, in • the Hack Welter, ■':■ Both are trained'by H. Hickey; at Hastings, and. they finished first and Bccond, Hwith a neck betweon them. St. Elmn made play for half, a mile; where Sir Daniel went to the front, bjit was followed by Chief. Marshal, who entered the ''straight onterms with the colt. The weight told on the hurdlo horse,: and she was btateri by a 'neck. Tho Open Welter, looked a good thing for Royal Simon, who had divided Mann,, kau.and Mescal in'the Welter .yesterday, and/this pair/were tlie dividend payers., In the / Summer Handicap., to-tlayß. Oliver had tho mount, but lie was /not fortunate at the barrier, and could/not get to the frpnt.i"Lady. Yolga.was first away, but Niiku'atu soon joined her, and Royal Simon took third place. The two closed up . a furlong from, liomij, .end, were then joined T>y : Kaurod and Matlow. A fine'finish'between'the five resulted: in a victory for Kauroa, who was ridden by C. Jenkins, .and paid a big dividend! ; Postillion was unlucky at the start In the Farewell Hack, and was not dangerous on the journey. • The'black colt started a hot favourite, but could only finish' third. The' winner turned' up in Eminent, who had run prominently for five fnrlongs ;in the Welter the first day. Monologue was a good; second, just clear of the favourite. Sylvia May led for half a mile, but: the field then surrounded her, and 6he? could only finish" fourth.. - .
