NEW YEAR RACE MEETING.

; RACING AT TAUHERINIKAU. SUMMER MEETING, BISTINCTION WINS A DOUBLE, WAIRARAPA CUP. AN EASY WIN FOR OBLIGANT. Tho summer meeting of tho Wairarapa Racing Club was held on tho club's course at Tauherinikau yesterday, and thero was a • large attendance, although tho trains from Wellington were not as iiell patronised as usual. This was to be accounted for partly by tho fact that tho weather outlook in the 'city was not good in tho early morning, and that the trains did not suit tho convenience of tho public. Some fifty or sixty people, who journeyed by the ordinary time-table train, wero carried right on to Masterton, and had practically no opportunity of gettmj back to Tauherinikau to attend the mooting. _ , A light rain fell on the course, during the greater part of the day, b>:t the go. ing was not injuriously affected. It was rather improved by the showers. Fields were not quite as large as usual, but this did not lessen the speculation on the machine, and during the day rue sum of .£13,233 was invested as cgainst ,£8315 for the first day last year. . The principal 'event during the day, the Wairarapa Cup, was won by Obligant, who is owned by the very successful Uisborne sportsman, Mr. F. Hail. , A feature of the racing was the euccess'of Mr. W; E. Bidwill's colours, Distinction winning ' two races, and Imagination also being victorious. As Mr. Bidwill. is president of the club, and as his horses were heavily supported by the public, the victories were . extremely popular. ■ Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr. W. H. Hartgill, the judge's box was filled by Mr. J. E. Henrys, who hoistcii the winning numbers promptly on every occasion. ,; , . No fewer than ten candidates had their engagements continued in the Maiden Hack Race, but they were not a very high-class lot. The public made Elevoted a good favourite, and ho duly won, though at one stage of tho roco it seemed n<i if his rider might be holding Operation too cheaply. The latter, after being well beaten in the straight, got to within a head of the favourite at tho winning post. Tho scratching pen was much in evidence in the Tuhitarata Handicap, and only three horses went to the post They proved a'troublesomo trio at the post, and it_took a Jong time to get them away * nil Rate losing a couple of. lengths Peroneal, who .was favourite, had the race won at any stage and passed tho post two lengths ahead of Pull Rate. St. Bees, with "Sid." Reid in tho saddle, ntlr m n° l™ m \K in , the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, but he never looked realy dangerous,. and waa beaten out of « place at the finish, The race proved f ° r Dist ™«°n, who won irom ena to end. ««u r t tc « ines r^uoe ' d ■s? Hall, who haJa S tn^vif, teamof l ,OrSe3 \°- «"ryhisco ours this year, was thus credited with another E?S d jJ tßke -. Ceylon made a better showing than in Tier Awapuni engagements voma. The last-named ran her race in patches, and drifted from the front to &°ljj e, «. <rf the fi ? d in °«asions. Bally Shannon, after losing a lot of pound at tho first bend, ran to tho front, but was beaten at the end of. six furlongs.

Secret Link was made a warm fnvourito for the Nursery Handicap, and won quite easily at tho Jhisli. She is the fi»t of wo-stock of Bowman to win, and has Undoubtedly plenty; of pace, Gcrberga, who led for the first couple of furlongs/tried to, run off the course at the home bend, and this spoiled her chance. Otter's nder lost a. stirrup iron, but tliis probably did not afieot his chance of doing better than filling second position. Listen, ?iA. lel i te H.M? lo ?h. got aivay from the barrier too badly to have any chance. ?•. ,'l Y ho had sllown some . form on the last day of the Manawatu meeting, was made favourite in the Pukio Hack Handicap, while Amber and White was also well bactaid. The favourite ran fairly well, but h£,d to bo content with third place, behind: Ladino and Sir Saracen, who both returned good dividends. Merry Guy's bit brake during the race, and she was struck by Field F*ro, both candidates falling. -j Fortunately neither jockeys nor horses were seriously, injured. E«ccnt winning form pointed to Imagination as a .likely jiwinner of the Reynolds Handicap, in" which the opposition was not very strong. The public made tho , Birkenhead filly a good favourite, Kina being the only other candidate whose chances wero seriously considered. Imagination never caused her backers any anxiety, and won with'something to 'spare. Kiua's chfinces were spoiled by her ; being badly left,,and she could get no nearer than fourth'at tho finish, • _ Distinction was produced a second time in tho Mokai Hack Welter Handicap, and notwithstanding tho fact that he was penalised for his :jearlier win ho was in-' stalled .:He duly won, and his* victory made the sixth success for faV" ouritcs during the day.

•..■■;, NOTES ON THE EACINQ. ■ (By Telegraph!— Special Reporter.) '■■■'" Palmerston, January 1. The Marten summer meeting iiommeno- . Ed to-day in fine but overcast weather; and before a ; record attendance. 'Just as the field was at the post j for the' Stewards' . Welter Handicap, a light rain fell,', and continued for the rest;of tho day. ■ The starting,was in tho hands of Mr. A. Morse, who was responsible for even dispatches throughout the. day. Th© principtal ovent—the Cup—was won by Sea-, tondale, tho favourite. In tho'Bailway Handicap, §tyx, a pronounced favourite, was rather easily beaten by ,an outsider in Lady Volga. . l : Bend-rook and Suriiroso monopolised; tho attention of backers in the Hack Hurdles, in which,Nescot, who:is sore, Ibharj and Ngoto were withdrawn. After a slight de- . lay at tho barrier, a. good start was effected. Pumau, who- is wry green, was slow to find his feet, and Shady Girl whipped round at the post. Strategist immediately took up the running, and led from Sunrose, with Rondrock next. Passing tho seven furlongs the. last-named' ran into 6econd place, and at tho half-mile he and Strategist were two'lengths clear of Sunrose, with the others in difficulties. Under tho stick, EcndTook took charge; at the last fence, and, ; coming on, .won by a couple of lengths. Sunrose was well back, and Knutsford finished best of the remainder.!. . ' . '.■". ■''■ ■■;■'.''■.'■ Styl', and nothing else, would go down with backers in the Bailway' Handicap. A beautiful start was made. Styx being out with Lord Possible, but, Blue take soon headed tho pair, and took the'field down tho back etretah at a smart pace. At the three furloiigs Styx headed Blue Lake, but across the bottom ho. had to give way to Lady Volga; The black mare was first into the straight, and at the'distance the field bunched.. Lord .Possible- and Bluo Lake each made good ruus, but they could not, reach Lady Volga and Styx.. Lord Pofcblo wa9 most unlucky, and came from last placo in the final quarter. . i. . Postillion looked on tho big side when : ho went out in the Trial Plate, but despite this tho public made -.-■ him a good favourite, with Sir ;Danicl and St. Elmn also well backed. Sir Daniel was in front for a couploof chains, but at'the end of a furlong tho Advance colt took chargo, and, under a strong pull, lie ;;lcd for the remainder of tho way'i. Dekko and Sir Daniel had a good tussle for'second place, which . tho former got by a noso.only. '-'.•■'■•'. -~;.'. The Cup went to the favourite—Scatori-dalo-after a good race, in which : ;'the whole of tho field had a winning chanco nt tho turn. The pace vas slow for the first'half.-mile,' but• tho last six furlongs was run in lrain. lGSsec. Byron, J)ear- ■ cst, and Sea Queen were first away, but tho two last-named were steadied and Byron set a slow pace in front. Down the back Seatondalo ■ and Master .Laddo ran up to him, whilo Sea Queen and Dearest still tailed'the field. At the two furlongs, tho field bunched, but Seatoiidato's condition stood to him, and ho won nicely' from ' Byron; with Master Laddo third. Sea Queen was stopped by tho weight. Dearest got a bad run, being on the outsido ; nearly the wholo.way.'„■-, ' - ', '• Heather, Nukuatu, and Monologue were ! evenly backed in tho, Electric Handicap, , The - withdrawals .were' Expect,, Phrosoi j Ngakau, and Taurauga. Eminent". and i Sepoy were tho quickest; to begin, whilo j Bonfire was slow at the barrier. Tho ] two leaders put a break, on tho field it's they raced down the back, but across, tho i bottom Heather came fi'oin the rear. Sh'o ' was carried-out turn, but easily dlsDOsed of tho fielfj, Nukuatu was n ;

length in front of Eminent, with Mono» loguo and Soiioy in that order, and<Boa« . firo a long way back. Monologue -wis stopped badly in the 6traight, or sl.ff might have been a lot closer at tho finisl. .After a 6oricso£ defeats Manakau niado amends to-day 'when bo scored a lucky win in..the- Stewards' Welter Handicap, A perfect start was made in. front ot tho stand. At tlio end of a furlong, Manakau and Kauroa were at th« head of a bunched field. Passing the saxfurlongs post, thoy were headed by King Try, who shortly afterwards gave way to Royal Simon. Tlio latter was made • 100 much um of, and entered tho etxftight with a big lead. Manakau got a lucky opening on tho mils, and camo on to win by a nock. Mescal,, who was toiled off in tho first' part, finished in third place.' Eclogue put in a good run across the '.. bottopi, but Iro was done when the straight was entered. Matlow was close up fourth, This mado tho third successive win of H, Tricklebank.:, Tho Hack Welter was a good betting ) race, tho favouritism being closely divided between Manitau, Chief Marshal, and Tiwari. Tho last-named was lucky to ' win, as Chief Marshal was giving bim.a ■:.' long start over tho last, half-nulo, ond ; i then only got beaten by a narrow margin. Manitau. had a nice,position tho whole way, but tho weight stepped her over tho last, furlong, Whimper appeared,to havo , a chance when racing across thei bottom bend, but he also tired over tho last bit. Tho final event saw tho downfall of a. very hot favourite in Mr. T. Long's Sylvia May—a winner at Woodvillo and Palmer- i 6ton North. There was somo excitement ! prior to the 6tart, this being caused by '< Hapingo (bolting twiijo and covering a i Tound each time. Sylvia May began "with / her usual smartness, but she got no break i to-day, and Yankee Doodle always had her / doing her best. In tho run hoiao Gorbora ' —a well-fancied candidate from; Hastings f —camo with a terrifio rush, and gavo \ Tricklebank his fourth win of. tho afternoon: Austin (Advance—Good Luck), who !. wasi well backed, got out badly, but finish. .! cd well in fourth place.. ■•.;..
