ENGINE CRASHES INTO MOTO'fi. ' . Hawera, January 1. A fafal accident occurred at the Normanby railway station crossing this afternoon, when a motor-car, driven by Frederick Butterworth, of Opunake, with- whom was John Young, also of Opunake, was run into by a speoial train from New Plymouth. Young was killed instantaneously, and Butterworth was seriously injured. Ho was taken to the Hawera Hospital. Young was a single man, aged 31, and a blacksmith. The motor-car was smashed to pieces. DEATH BY DROWNING. * . Auckland, January 1. A man named Wheatley was drowned while bathing at Morrinsville to-day. Ho was with two companions, and suddenly disappeared. At a late hour tho body was recovered. Deceased was a good swimmer, and it is supposed that he was seizod with cramp. He was married, and had one child.- He was employed as a carpenter.
