THE SHIELD CRICKET
I AT AUCKLAND. DOGGED STAND BY PHILLIPS. ' OMITS BOWLING. '..(By Telegraph.—tress Association.) Auckland, January 1, ' The first Plunket Shield match of the season between Auckland and Weilingtoh was commenced on the Domain to-day in the:presence of about 500 spectators. The day was showery, and the wind made ■things very unpleasant both for specta'tors and players alike. The wicket, although'a trine on the dead side, was by no means bad.' The end of the first day's play leaves both sides with equal chances, and the finish should be a close one. Wellington: won. the toss and batted, and, although they started badly,': the later batsmen came to light well, and the side made a very creditable showing. Phillips played a most invaluable in-, nings, and gave a most dogged and steady : display, though his soore strokes were well varied) Wilson played a lively innings for his runs, and 1 Brice, Bobinson, and Grimmett each gave very open displays. .Beechey gave: one of his best exhibitions, and hai hard luck in being run out when going well. Oliff took the last: three wickets with successive balls, and a collection was taken up on the ground for l a presentation to the diminutive howler for. his fine achievement. ; Auckland started fairly, well, though the loss of Horspool and Cummuigs so early did not augur particularly-'well. However, the side is very strong in batting, and the total should not'be. far short of Wellington's efforts. The match willibe continued to-morrow. • ',- Following were the scores:— . •■;'■'•
