BOWLS TOURNEY.
MARRED BY HEAVY RAIN. PLATING IN COATS UNDBE UMBRELLAS. After a. glorious three weeks' stretch of summer weather, yesterday's • holiday—New Tear's Day—was marred in Wellington by quiet but continuous rain, which effectually checked all outdoor'sports, except perhaps swimming and surfing. Early in the morning it drizzled a fine misty "rain, and as the morning advanced the downfall became heavier until at 11 a.m. it was pouring down,'. steadily—tsoakingly. . Tho country may need tho rain after the recent dry spell, but to local bowlers it was most unwelcome The Wellington Bowling Centre's'annual tournament, (which I was to have commenced at.9.80 a.m. yesterday, was completely marred by the unexpected downpour. Some of the rinks, under the impression that the weather was likely to break, made ri. prompt start, and' though the rain gradually became heavier, stuck to tho groan, and:with the aid of coats and umbrellas, finished the 16-head games of the first round. A start was not niado on the Wellington; Club's green until 10.30 a.m., when a light streak in the sky seemed to indicate a break. It was vain hope, for no'. sooner had the rinks commenced playing than' the rain came down "good and hard,">nd after a valiant strugglo to swish tho bowls towards ''kitty through the gathering lakes, the games had to be abandoned, much to'everyone's disgust. Section 5 (on Kelburne green) finished, three out of. the five games, and 3, 4, and 6 completed their first round games beforo abandoning play for the day. ■ No games in sections 1 and 2 (Wellington green) . were' completed.
