Formerly served in the Royal Engineers, and served in Egypt and the Sudan. SIR GEORGE KEMP, Liberal member of the North-west Division of Man- . Knight Bachelor. , MR. WALTER CLARKE BUCHANAN, : member of Parliament for the Wairarapa,. New Zealand, is created a Knight Bachelor, : . •■■,■' . Mr. Walter Clarke Buchanan was born in Argyllshire in 1838, and received his early education in the parish school at'Greenock. He emigrated to Australia as a lad of eighteen and settled down to station life in Victoria. Six years later he came oyer to Otago.and shortly afterwards settled on a leasehold farm in Canterbury, There he did his full share of pioneering work and when tho gold diggings wore in full swing on the West Coast he bought cattle and drove them across the Southern Alps to Hokitika, where there was then a, good market. Those were stirring times and the. young colonist had his full share of hard work, adventure, .and hardship. In the year 1871 he' came north and purchased his well-known station, Tupurupuru in tho Masterton district. There ho set about subduing the wilderness with tho spirit,of • true. pioneer;' before very, many years had passed ha had bocomo one of the most successful farmers in the distriot ■ Ho proceeded to improvo the breed of'battle'and sheep and became one of the most active promoters of tho frozen moat industry at its inception. , He visited, both England and America 1 to 6tudy the latest developments in machinery connected with'; tho freezing process. He was one of the founders and n direotor of' tho Wellington Meat Export Company—ono of tho ' principal meat, export:companies in tho North Island. At the same time he took a keen interest m local government Mid became a member of ,th 6 South ;'Wairarapa » n ?t y u . ncil and i ■ a ■ member of : tho Wellington Education Board;, Ho was also one of tho leading spirits in connection. with the local Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and himself an exhibitor of prize stock.. In 1881 he entered the House of Representatives as member for. South . Wairarapa, and represented that district for some six years. Ho subsequently represented the Wairarapa constituency in the House of Representatives for many-years,' and is at present member for that district. In Parliament he has always been a keen oritio and his knowledge of finance, local government, education, agriculture, ana of affairs generally has been of ■ great value not only to his constituency, but to the country as a whole. A few years ago ha built at a cost of J!GO00 a hospital for incurables at Greytown, and he has also built out of his own private funds a ohuroh at Gladstone. At the time of the formation of the Massey, Ministry ho magnanimously, stood down in favour of some of the younger members of tho party, though his claims to Ministerial rank were equal if not greater than theirs'. The Reform party in Parliament, by,;whom he is greatly beloved, were not slow to recognise his disinterestedness in'this matter. A few years ago ho offered .£SOOO to the Government of the day with a view to the starting of an experimental farm in the Wairarapa distriot, but for 60me reason or other his, offer was refused. Though seventy-four'years of agej Mr. Buchanan is still one of the most alert and active men in Parliament. At the present moment Sir Walter Buchanan is on board an Orient liner on his way to England. • MR. A.. L. LEONARD STOWE, Clerk of Parlinments. .•■:..: Mr. Leonard Siowe, who for some years now lias been Clerk of Parliaments,' was born at Trolly Hall, Buckingham, and educated at Iff ley and Rugby School, under Dr. Goulburn. Ho came to New Zealand in tho Lady Alice, and settled at Nelson. Ho was secretary to Mr, Thomas Carter and to Mr. A. P. Soymour, both Superintendents of tho Marlborough Provincial Council; appointed Clerk to the Provincial Council in 18G4, and Clerk to tho Legislative Council in 1805, which posir tion ho still holds. In' 1889 ho succeeded Major Campbell as Clerk of Parliaments, and he continuos te act in that capacity.
