WANGANUI JOTTINGS.
(By IVsleitraph.—Special Correspondent.) — 9— ; .' Wanganul, January 1, Meal weather conditions were experienced for tho holiday in tho early part of the day. The principal attraction in town was the garden fete, to raise funds towards beautifying the town. Elaborate preparations had been made for the function,' which was lield on the .Wangonui Jockey Club's course, and.attracted a big crowd. Unfortunately rain set in .about 3 o'clock, and drove tho peoplo home in hundreds. Had tho weather remained fino for another couple of hours, the takings would have been greatly enhanced, but as it is it is hoped that somo .£SOO or .£6OO profit will result. Hundreds visited Castlecliff, but they, too, had to return hurriedly, while others who went for privnto picnics also got soaked. Apart from the fact that tho holiday was, to some extent, spoilt to-day,, the rain was badly needed after the three weeks' fino spell. The. back-block settlers and farmers will welcome it, as it will enable them to get on with tho sowing of grass seed. .'..■'
