RIFLE SHOOTING.

NEW YEAR PRIZE MEETING. The Wellington Rifle Association's annual prize meeting takes place at 'l'rentham on January 1 and 2 .(to-morrow and Thursday). The entries : this year are very large, and a. very successful meeting is anticipated. The ride clubs are very well represented, but few territorials have entered, in fact, the entries of the latter are exceeded by those of the senior cadets. The trophies to be contested for are on view in the window of Mr. J. Turner, tobacconist, Cuba Street. Amongst them is the "Zealandia" championship belt for senior cadets of No. 5 area group, presented by the old Zealandia Riiies, of Wellington. Seventyfive new targets liavo been prepared for the meeting, and the new standard figure, target for use at 300 yards and at 500 yards will be used for the first time. Considering the number and class of the competitors, the meeting will be the largest ever lield by. the Wellington Rifle Association. • The entries include the preBent: New; Zealand riflo champion, J. Lovedaj-, who has just gained North Island honours at. Wanganui; and also four ex-champions—A. Ballinger, Wellington; G; Hyde, Opaki; R. J. King, Opaki; and' J. Milroy, Nelson. Ballinger has not competed for some years, and his entry this J'ear is very popular. Other entries include such well-known shots as Masefield and Henderson, Sounds; Sharland, Nelson; Henry, Sandford, Duthie, and Wood, Christchurcli; James, Napier; ■. Govenlock, Woodville; Marenzi, Eketahuna; Feast- and - Mawley,. Opaki; Ching, R.N.Z.A.; Miller, Blenheim. .The following, are. the- executive, officers for th' 9 meeting:—President H. Marshall, Karori (chairman of the executive committee) ; Lieut. Gasquoine, sth Eegiment (secretary and,treasurer); and, Major Matheson, Wellington College (chief range officer). . , . i A' limited supply of ammunition will be available on the ground.
