ATHLETIC SPORTS.

CRICKET. THOTT AND TEAM DEPART. Last evening the South Melbourne cricketers—more popularly known as "Harry Trott's team"—left for Lyttelton by tlio Maori. They were accompanied to tlio steamer by a number of Mid-week Association officials, and also by a number of cricketers; As Mr. J. C. Cusack (secretary of tlio Wellington Wednesday Association) was unable to travel south, the Melbourne men were accompanied by Mr. T. Crouch, who is travelling with the team as the association's representative. As tlio steamer backed'out from tlio wharf lusty voices were heard singing: "For Tliey are Jolly Good Fellows." The decks were lined with over 500 passengers among whom could be discerned a group of athletic-looking men wearing straw boaters with the familiar red band thereon; In tlio centre of the group was a genial looking personage—Harry Trott by name—an. clustered round about him were his "merrie men," ail members of the South Melbourne Cricket Club, which has just defeated Wellington on the Basin Reserve. They wero just as merry as the crowd of cricket enthusiasts who had assembled oil the wharf to bid thorn "au revoir." Cheers were heartily given for the dc'parting cricketers, and these were as heartily responded to by Trott and his men. It was a good send-off and went to show how popular the South Melbourn'ites had become durin gtheir short stay in the Empire City.

NORTH AND SOUTH TAEANAKI. (By Telegraph.—Press' Association.! : Hawcra, Deoember 28. . The cricket match between North and, South Taranaki was continued to-day. South, were dismissed for 85 runs, to which total the best contributors wero Pratt (2G), Penny (IC, not out), and Gardner (11). • In their second innings, North made 112.■ The best batting scores were: Nichol, 25; Bain, 14; Pei'ham, 10; Osborne, 21; Marsh, IC, not out. Slinger, six wickets for 28 runs, was the most successful bowler opposed' to them. South collapsed, in their second innings, and they, were all' sent back for 57, of which Gardner scored IG, Penny 13, and Pratt 14. Bain and Somerville divided the bowling honours, taking five wickets each. ' North Taranaki therefore won the match by 111 runs. V INTER-STATE MATCHES. VICTORIA BEATS NEW' SOUTH , 'WALES. .
