A tram smash caused a tremendous sensation in the centre of the city on Saturday afternoon. A car was mounting the hill at King Street, when the brakes failed to act, and it ran back, dashed across Castlercagh and Pitt Streets, and collided with a car behind, near George Street. The spectacle of a car running down the wrong line so furiously that some of the passengers were looking anxiously to the doors, others were jumping off, and women were screaming, attracted the attention of hundreds, who crowded the streets. When the runaway crossed Castlereagh StTeet the crowd ran after it, as though joining in a chase. ' Warning shouts enabled the driver of a car at the intersection of Pitt Street to stop the runaway in time to avoid a right-angle collision. The runaway had its ironwork twisted badly, tho woodwork smashed and damaged. So eitensivo was the damage that it wa9 surprising to find that there were no fatalities. ' Fourteen people were sent to the hospital to lave their injuries attended to.
