The executive officers of the Wellington district branch of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers entertained Mr* John M. Corby/ of Melbourne, general secretary of.the at dinner at the Grand Hotel last evening. Several speechos were made, and references were made to Mr. Corby's excellent services to the institute. , .
The' death occurred oxi Christmas Day of Mr. Arthur Appleby, an old and esteemed resident of Christchurch. Mr. Appleby, who was- bcrn at_ Burton-on-Trent in 1849, arrived in Christchurch in 18G7. Ho was in tho office of Mr. Terrady, solicitor, for a time, and subsequently was attached to'.the-staff-of the "Press.*' He loft journalism to go into the real estate' business, in which ho was engaged up till a few years -ago. _For years' ho' was &' director of Messrs. Whifcombe' and Tombs, Ltd., and was for foine time a member of tho Christchurch City Counoil. He was one of the founders of tho Christchurch Liedertafel,- and always took, a keen interest in musical matters. He leaves a widow and five so».s.
