TUG-OF-WAR.
THE CARNIVAL'- OPENED. The Tug-of-War Carnival, which has attracted quite a lot of attention away from here, was opened ill the -Town Hall last evening before a comparatively small crowd of people. The bouts _ were_ introduced by a short show of moving pictures. Tho first event.' was a bout between teams from the Gasworks (Napier) and Muni', Cottrell and Co., of ■Wellington. It happened I'hat the Wellington men won after going the full time —10 minutes—a stubborn struggle. . Cbi'istclnirch met a team from the New Zealand Express Company, and after a very strong and exciting pull the southerners won bv - two inches. A team of "All Blacks" tried strength with a. team from the Athletic Football Club and won after a nine minutes' trial. Christnhurch beat a _ New Zcalander team comparatively easily. Halcomba beat Wellington Fire Brigade rather easily. . Hunt, Cottrell, and Co. beat a Christchurch- team after a long struggle of ten minutes. The ' New Zealand Express Company s team beat Halcombo in another event by four inches. .
