PAINFUL CASE. ■ Auckland, December 26. William Moncrieff, aged 46 years, died at the hospital from hemorrhage of the brain this morning. He was' attested in a street on Monday in a helpless state of intoxication. DISCOVERED IN A.SQUALID ROOM. Auckland,' December 26. • Johanna Cosfcello, aged 70, was found dead on -the floor of an empty house which she had been permitted to occupy until a tenant was found. The room which she occupied was in a condition of indescTibable squalor. This is remarkable as the woman was reputed to -bo • possessed of means. BOILING TAR AND A FIRE. Auckland, December 26. _ Two six-roomed houses in Wheturangi Road, near Cornwall Park, were burned down to-day. One was occupied by Mr. Arnold Braithwaite, and the other by Jlr. G. 'A. Clements. ' Mr. Braithwaite wa§ boiling tar, which ignited, and caused the fire. -The brigade was.without.water, but all the furniture was saved. The insure, ances are unknown. Mr. Clenients apd his family were away on holiday. TRAGEDY IN THE BUSH. Dunedin December 26. The body of a man was found in the | bush near the northern cemetery this morning. It was in a decomposed state, and it was praotically impossible to identify it. Lying alongside was a rifle which had a discharged cartridge in the barrels There is no clue to the identity of the deceased. INJURED IN A LEAPING MATCH. Gisborne, December 2. George Campbell, a young man about 25 years of age, was riding the horse Minnehaha in the leaping match at the Waerangaahika sports to-day when the horse caught in the top rail and- fell, throwing the rider who was seriously injured by contact with its hoors. Campbell was brought into town, and is at present in a precarious condition. POSTAL MATTER. Christchurch, December 26. The Hon. E. H. Rhodes, PostmasterGeneral; when seen respecting the cable message, referring to the visit of Mr. Eraser, the Commonwealth PostmasterGeneral, to New Zealand, stated that his information was that Mr. Eraser would leave Sydney on Saturday, and arrive in [Wellington next Wednesday. It is Mr. Eraser's intention to discuss with Mr. Jlhodes a number of questions of common interest to the Commonwealth and New Zealand. Amongst these will be the rates charged l>y tho Atlantic cable companies for messages reaching Australia, via Pacific; the establishment and equipment of Pacific wireless stations, and . the installation of automatic. telephones.
