THE HOLIDAY.
BRILLIANT WEATHER. BIG EXODUS FROM THE CITY. Perfect weather prevailed' for the holiday, and great crowds of pleasure-suckers journeyed forth, in various directions, all the resorts in the neighbourhood being .thronged. 1 . With the waters of Port Nicholson -Harbour looking like gl4ss, anil .beautiful sunshine streaming down from clear blue skies, i; was only to be expected that a large number of people would make !'or the various pleasure resorts round the waterfront yesterday. Apart from the large numbers of people' who journeyed from Petone, the officials of , the Ferry ■ Company estimated that. fully 6000 people left Wellington side of tile harbour for the various bays to which the company's steamers, travel. CATHOLIC PICNICS. AT DAY'S BAY AND LOWER HUTT. Between four and five thousand .holiday-, makers , took advantage ;■ of the.' perfect summer, weather that prevailed, yesterday, and tripped across the harbour to the Catholic picnic at Day's, Bay; where a most ; enjoyable day was spent.. An enerjgctic: sports committee saw -to the disciplined dissipation of athletic energy, and I carried out an interesting programme. I - For 'those to whom the attractions of a run out. to the country appealed more than a whiff of the sea, Father . lane s annual picnic, at tlio Lower Hutt provided an interesting journey's. end, ■ and sports, and pastimes furnished entertainment for the young people. :■....;" TIUARU. CELEBEATION. fimaru, December 26. The finest of -weather orevailed for the' holiday. The chief amusements for the public, the Caledonian Sports at Temuka and Waimate, were in every way successful, with a record attendance. An open bowline tournament is ' in progress, in which Dunedin, Oamaru, Ashburton,' and Christchurch players are taking part. This. will be completed to-morrow.
