Mr. A: Veitch, senior partner in the firm of Veitch .and Allan, drapers, for a quarter of a. century, has disposed of his interest in the firm to Mr, William Allan, under whose sole direction the business will bo carried on for'the future, though still under (he same name as heretofore. The firm commenced business over a generation ago in a small "shop in Upper Tory StrceL when Te Aro flat was not nearly to closely built upon as it is today, and more or less unkempt, weedgrown fields occupied the sites now covered by St. Patrick's' College and Jessie and Marion Streets. The firm flourished, and finding the locale too far removed from the haunts of the general public, removal was made to Cuba Street, where some four years ago 'the present, commodious premises were erected. ' Mr. Veitch intends to lake.life a little easier for the future. This, 'however, does not mean that ho will relinquish business connections in other directions, neither will it mean a less ardout love for the bowling green, where ho is held in esteem by all followers of the game.

A. pleasant function took place at a luncheon tendered, to Mr. C. C. Butt at the Royal Oak Hotel on Tuesday. Occasion was taken te make him a presentation prior to his leaving the staff of the Electrical Engineer of the Public Works Department to engage in sheep-farming pursuits in Hawke's Bay. Mr. Parry, in making the presentation, referred to Mr. Butt's connection with the hydro-electric development work of Lake Coleridge since its inception, and expressed regret at losing the services of such a capable and congenial assistant. Mr. Birks endorsed Mr. Parry's remarks, Mr. Butt responding.

The esteem in which Mr. Donald Robertson has been held throughout the l J ost and Telegraph service in New Zealand is to be shown, but not quite in the customary way. Owing to the nature of the new and important, office which he is about to assume as Chief Public Service Commissioner, it was not considered by those interested that Mr. Robertson would care to receive anything intrinsically valuable, but his worth as a just, and extremely capable executive officer is to be recognised by a valedictory letter to bo signed by every officer of the. Post and Telegraph Department throughout New Zealand, the sheets bearing the signatures, with the letter, are to be suitably bound.

Sir John Pindlay, accompanied by Lady Findlny (who has been on a visit to the Old Country), returned to Wellington by tho Moeraki yesterday.

After High Mass yesterday, Mr. Isodore Mount, organist of St. Mary of the Angels' Church, was. presented with a "token of their esteem by members of the choir.

Mr. V. It. Kerr, of Queen's College, Melbourne, has been selected as tho Rhodes scholar for Victoria for 1913.

A Press Association mossage from Sydney states that to mark tho completion of his sixtieth year of active connection with journalism, the staffs of tho "Sydney Morning Horald" and "Mail" have presented Sit James Fairfax with a handsomo niomonto,

-Mr. Leslio Reynolds leaves for Dunedin .towards the end of this week, and may probably ho a fortnight away, engaged upon reporting on tho proposed reclamation schomo of tho Upper Rcaohes of the Otngo Harbour. Ho returned from Wairoa at the end of last week, and ho is satisfied- with, the works there, and predicts that within 18 months Wairoa will have a permanent entrance to its harbour and to tho country lying behind it.

Mr. W. H. George has received cable advice from his son, Mr. Stanley George, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., that he has been successful in securing the degree of M.8., 8.5., of London University. Mr. Georgo is at present filling an appointment as assistant houso surgeon at Guy's Hospital.

Mr. G. L. Petersen, touring manager for Messrs. Wirth Bros, has arrived in Wellington to make arrangements, for a short season only, opening on Monday, January 13.

Mr. R. Triggs, of tho Commonwealth Postmaster-General's Department, who has been appointed a Public Service Commissioner in New Zealand, was entertained at dinner recently by tho Melbourne officers of tho central administration. Among those present were Mr, J. Oxonham (Secretary), Mr. D. C. M'Laohlan (Public .Service Commissioner), and Mr. J. Hcsketh (Chief Electrical Engineer). Mr. Triggs leaves Melbourne for New Zealand on December SO. The following visitors to Wellington are at present staying at tho Grand HotelsMr. Y. Nogaki, Yokohama, Japan; Miss B.
