Tho one' l most likely to bo favoured is that quoted in the "New Zealand Diary," which states.that summer begins on December 22 (tlus-longest day). From observations extending over a number of years, it appears that on the average the hottest period is from January-21 to 25, and the coldest from July 20 to 25, which periods are, therefore, the natural mid-summer and midwinter. Another theory is that summer commences on December 1.
